Importing a Solution with a Virtual Table into New Environment - Data Source secrets are not included in solutions

When Exporting/Importing my solution into a new environment with Virtual Tables, the connection is not working.

I have created Virtual Tables using the 'Table from External Data' wizard. These Virtual Tables have been imported into a solution where I have built a simple Canvas Application connecting to the Virtual Tables. I am using an 'Azure AD Integrated' connection type.

The following 3 references have also been imported.

  • Connection Reference.
  • Virtual Table Data Source.
  • Virtual Table Data Provider.

Solution "MigrationTest_SQLOnly" imported successfully with warnings: Data Source secrets are not included in solutions. You'll need to edit your data sources to add secrets back following solution import.

Ref: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-apps/developer/data-platform/reference/web-service-error-cod... 0x80044818 - 2147203048 Name: EmptySecretInDataSource Message: Data Source secrets are not included in solutions. You'll need to edit your data sources to add secrets back following solution import.

I feel I have included all the references required, the virtual tables are importing but I can not understand why this is happening.

Let me alleviate you of the pain I went through.

EmptySecretInDataSource refers to a secret created during an Application Registration. A secret is created for each environment you will import to (Dev, QA, STG etc). The solution in my case was to set up a DevOps Pipeline which can carry across the secret in the process.

This sounds long winded, but was actually quicker than expected for my first pipeline. (and less time than I spent banging my head worrying about this error message "EmptySecretInDataSource".

Two Blogs available (i followed the 2nd blog, which much to my pain, has a missing step, which i'll mention below)

Both blogs follow a route that involves setting up the Pipeline in the raw YAML code mode, this isn't required and actually a less helpful route down the road, instead use the available pipeline Wizard. I focused on the blog steps and applied them to the step by step youtube tutorial carried out by Matthew Devaney.

If you follow the YAML Approach from Blog 2 listed above, the missing step is to 'Allow scripts to access the Oauth token, which you can enable in the Agent job 1 step in the wizard.

MedievalMatty_2-1696355446973.png

YAML Code:
steps:

- checkout: self
persistCredentials: true

Second error I faced in the Blog is the final line in the 'command line' step. His configuration was different to what I needed.

# Authenticate against a git repository in a build process
git -c http.extraheader="AUTHORIZATION: bearer $(System.AccessToken)" push --set-upstream origin $exportBranchName

For me it requires this: git -c http.extraheader="AUTHORIZATION: Bearer $(System.AccessToken)" push origin HEAD:main
For others the last bit may be: push origin main

If you are at a corporation, you may need to request Admin Account Privileges in order to access https://portal.azure.com

Bonus content from my journey: Anyone planning on also Importing and Updating Environment Variables, this can be done using a tool called Power DevOps Tool Installer really easily.

Drop me a reply if you get stuck anywhere, happy to bump heads.

One last thing...a favor in return, if anyone in the meantime figures out how to update the connection string for the Virtual Table Data Source in a DevOps Pipeline, let me know. The work around is to includes:
-  Include the VTDS in the solution for the first import, saving it in the environment.
- Update it manually in the 'Advanced Settings' section on the environment, pointing it to the right database
- Afterwards remove it from the solution so it doesn't overwrite the updated VTDS connection string on the next import.

Surely this can be done in a pipeline, I haven't had a chance to investigate yet. Please share if you figure it out.
