Is Form Processing tool able to read from transposed tables?

We have a request from a client to read transposed table data that is in the format below.

RSammut_1-1611911184173.png

The headers are in the first column (Batch No, Qty, Carton, MFG date, date of expiry)

The number of following columns from 1 to 4 can vary, there can be more or less columns. Minimum 1 column, maximum 5.

I have not been able to get this to work with the AI Builder Form Processing tool.

Can someone confirm that this is not possible before I give a definitive answer to the client or let me know if it will be available in the future?

Thanks.

Hi @RSammut,

Thanks for reaching out with this question.

Tables need to have the same number of columns for AI Builder to be able to extract them.

However, what you can do is instead of extracting it as a table, tag each cell as a separate field. You would define the maximum number of possible cells you can encounter as fields and provide enough samples in the training set to tag them.

Another possible path is to leverage Azure Form Recognizer Layout API to extract tables on the fly: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/cognitive-services/form-recognizer/concept-layout#tables

I hope this helps.

Hi @JoeF-MSFT ,

Thanks for the quick reply, I'm impressed 🙂

I will have a look at the Form Recognizer Layout service and pass this information to the client.

Thanks a lot.
