Adding Text WebPart to Multiple SharePoint Pages

Hello,

I am relatively new to Power Automate and have mostly worked with Approval Workflows until now. I am currently trying to create a flow that will automatically add a Text Web Part at the top of several Pages to display an error message. I tried following the instructions on this post to do this but keep getting error messages. More on this below.

So far, this is what I have in my Flow:

UnluckySPUser_1-1689681404561.pngUnluckySPUser_2-1689681457162.png

The idea is that each page contained in a specific folder within Site Pages will automatically get updated to include a new Text Web Part displaying a specific error message. I've successfully identified the folder, the ID and ETag for each of the Pages and created an Apply to Each loop that cycles though all of them to GET data.

The PATCH action then gives me issues. I've tried using POST and get similar problems. The JSON currently in the screenshot "works" in the sense that the flow runs successfully. However, all of the pages then become completely empty. All existing Web Parts get deleted and no new ones are added.

Could someone else me understand what I'm doing wrong? Is the JSON I'm using incorrect? Or is this something that is not actually possible to do? Thanks for your help!

Hi @UnluckySPUser,

The CanvasContent1 property is also part of the output of the CheckOutPage method request. I would reuse that json. The approach I would take would be to put your new web part in the top and use a comma character and an expression to add the existing json in the same body payload of your PATCH request.

Below is an example

This is the expression to get the CanvasContent1 property value with existing web parts from the Checkoutpage request.

replace(slice(outputs('Send_an_HTTP_request_to_SharePoint_-_CheckOutPage')?['body']['d']['CanvasContent1'], 1, -1), '"', '\"')

The whole body value is

{
  "__metadata": {
    "type": "SP.Publishing.SitePage"
  },
  "CanvasContent1": "[{\"controlType\":4,\"id\":\"ed2476c7-994a-4a07-a322-8afe873c05f2\",\"innerHTML\":\"<p>Hello world in a Text Web Part from Power Automate!<br></p>\",\"position\":{\"zoneIndex\":1,\"sectionIndex\":1,\"controlIndex\":0.5,\"sectionFactor\":8,\"layoutIndex\":1},\"addedFromPersistedData\":true},@{replace(slice(outputs('Send_an_HTTP_request_to_SharePoint_-_CheckOutPage')?['body']['d']['CanvasContent1'], 1, -1), '"', '\"')}]"
}

Hi @UnluckySPUser,

In the link you are referring to I am using a different URI. In that example I am using the pages instead of items. Can you try and use that Uri instead? Also add an Accept key to your Headers, just to be sure.

Try something like below for the URI:

_api/sitepages/pages(@{item()['ID']})/SavePage

Hi,

Thank you so much for that! I've made the changes you suggested to the Flow and now the message actually appears!

I still have the problem though that every other Web Part that was previously present in the page gets deleted. After the flow runs successfully, the only thing remaining is the Title and the Text web part. This is what my flow looks like currently (i added the checkout and publish steps from your post about adding quick links). I guess the JSON I'm using is still not correct right? (in the SavePage step, I've tried POST, PATCH, and PUT but all of them delete all existing page content)

Do you know what I should do to make sure the text gets added without removing all existing Page content?

Hi @UnluckySPUser,

What I normally do is retrieve the current CanvasContent1 value and append the new json to the existing value. That is the value I use in the SavePage method. This way it should not remove existing web parts. Btw, I use the PATCH method with X-HTTP-Method MERGE headers.

I was thinking of the same, but I am not sure how to "extract" the other web parts from the page. All of the pages that I need to target display two buttons that link to the same sharepoint page and form, but they also display a different view of the one list (each page has a dedicated view of this list). So the existing webparts in the JSON would need to dynamically change for each "Apply to Each" run, if that makes sense.

Do you have any suggestions for how to achieve this? I know that "CanvasContent1" is part of the output of a GET HTTP request, but Im not sure how to leverage that data correctly in the JSON, or if there is another way to do this. Thanks again!

replace(slice(outputs('Send_an_HTTP_request_to_SharePoint_-_CheckOutPage')?['body']['d']['CanvasContent1'], 1, -1), '"', '\"')
