Approval flow where at least 2 of 3 approvers must approve

I have been asked to build an approval flow where the request for approval is sent to 3 managers.  At least 2 of these 3 managers must approve the request before it can be considered approved.  If any of the managers reject the request it should be rejected and an email sent back to the requester.

I have looked at parralel approvals, but it seems that the approved condition would be met if any of the branches approves the request.  I need to have at least 2 of the 3 approve the request, has anyone had this issue before?

I've looked through the questions here and I haven't ran across this scenario yet.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi @sguerrero1971,

Do you want to send out an email with at least 2 of the 3 managers approved the request?

Please check the following flow for a reference.

In my case, I have two approvers, when both of the two approvers approved the request, it will send out an email to the requester.

I use two parallel approvals and after each approval action, use a compose action to get the corresponding number with the following code:

if(equals(body('Start_an_approval')?['response'],'Approve'),0.5,0)

Then in the condition, if the total of the two compose action is greater than or equal to 1, send out the approved email to the request.

I have same scenario. I have implemented all things to consideration of approval from parallel branch. but i got stuck if 2 person approve and 3rd one didn't take any action. I saved value to variable as well. but things is all three person needs to take action (approve/Reject). because if one of the person doesn't act on approval then flow is not going ahead. In my case if got two approval then Flow should move, should not wait for third person action.

As you can see run after condition it will for all three activity to complete.

Hi @jainmilan02

I have the same problem, that my flow is stuck when not all people approve/reject. I like the solution you provided, but it is not entirely clear to me what the condition is after the approval as well as the code you working with to sum/add up all answers.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello ,

I have taken two integer variable to store approval and rejection decision. As soon as some one approve it then increment the variable as per the decision.

And then if you need two approval out of 3, in that case as soon as approval variable reach value to 2 then you can further implement your logic. (This logic needs to be in all parallel branch)

Hello @jainmilan02

thank you for your quick reply! I created my process as you suggested (picture 1). Still the process won't continue if not all approval answers were submitted (condition 6 not reached due to insufficient answers). Further I set that condition 6 runs even if one answer is skipped (picture 2). What is the problem and do you have any suggestions what I can try?

Thanks for the help!

Hi @jainmilan02,

I now have 3 separate approval processes running in parallel (see image below). With each decision, one of my Approve_Variable or Reject_Variable increases.

Now I am stuck on the final condition. In order for the final condition to take place, my flow needs the response of all approvers. At the moment I have solved it so that unanswered approvals expire after 48 hours and if at least 2 people have confirmed the invoice by then, the process can continue. However, this is not optimal.

With which formula can I say: "As soon as 2 approvers confirm the invoice, continue the process and skip the last answer" (I think this is the formula in your "Condition for CIO mail" section).

Thank you for the support 🙂

Hello @NL_Kaleido ,

I was also stuck at the same position.

From your solution there is a time line for the approver. If you don't want to implement time line there then what you can do is:

whenever there is an approval/ Rejection, based on that you need to increment your appropriate variable. And after that check if approval variable is greater than 2 then you can proceed further approval logic.

This approval logic will be in all three parallel branch and at the end you need to terminate the flow with "Success" so that flow will stop and other branch will not execute further.

Check my Screen shot if that is helpful for you.2022-04-07 15_53_46-Edit your flow _ Power Automate.png
