Building a JSON file with hierarchy from List rows present in a table (Excel action)

I'm creating a flow that retrieves data from an Excel based on specific inputs. The output should look like this:

{
    "UTCnow": "2019-08-28T15:19:44",
    "systems": [
        {
            "name": "SystemName",
            "roles": [
                {
                    "name": "User",
                    "description": "User access",
                    "RoleType": "Type",
                    "RoleApproverEmail": "ApproverEmail@test.com"
                },
                {
                    "name": "Admin",
                    "description": "Admin access",
                    "RoleType": "Type",
                    "RoleApproverEmail": "ApproverEmail@test.com"
                }
            ]
        }
    ]
}

 In my source Excel file, all these fields are on a single row.

I have a working version which returns everything on the same level in a JSON using an Append to string variable action inside an Apply to Each loop.

I'm struggling on how I can set it up to dynamically add the level, without hard-coding the SystemNames in the flow. The only solution I could think of is putting multiple Filter Array actions in sequence, hard-coding the system name in each Filter Array action and using the append to string variable to put it all together. However, the system names might change over time, breaking this flow.

My current flow setup:

Maarten_DIF_0-1707119995647.png

Maarten_DIF_1-1707120017155.png

This outputs in the following schema:

{
    "UTCnow": "2019-08-28T15:19:44",
    "SystemRoles": [
        {
            "SystemName": "SystemName",
            "RoleType": "Type",
            "RoleName": "User",
            "RoleDescription": "User access",
            "RoleApproverEmail": "ApproverEmail@test.com"
        }
    ]
}

Any help is appreciated!

Hi , @Maarten_DIF

According to your screenshot , you are using the "Append to string variable" to create your json.

And you want to dynamically add the level, without hard-coding the SystemNames in the flow.

So where dose your SystemNames which i can not see it in your screenshot.

And can you show some sample data in your Excel file and your end result json you want to get in your side?

Best Regards,

Yueyun Zhang

Hi Yueyun Zhang,

This is an example of my table.

AccessSourceRoleNameRoles.RoleTypeRoles.RoleDescriptionRoles.RoleApproverEmail

IT-Providerazu_spo_dpt_2Azure groupSPO group

IT-Providerazu_spo_dpt_5Azure groupSPO group
System1IR Can read and update specific fields related to IR.
System1Other employees Can read data in the application.
System1VC Can read and update specific fields.
SharedMailboxesHR@test.euShared MailboxHuman Resourcesapprover1@test.eu
SharedMailboxesLegal@test.euShared MailboxLegalapprover2@test.eu

SharedMailboxescompliance@test.eu
SharedMailboxesir@test.eu
SharedMailboxessupport@test.euShared MailboxSupportapprover4@test.eu

Ignoring the filter query action, I want the results of this table to look like this:

                }
            ]
        }
    ]
}

For now, I don't care about null or "" to be passed. Hopefully we can improve data quality before I put this flow in production 🙂

Thank you,

Maarten

Hi Chriddle,

This looks like it will do the trick. I'm not so familiar with the xpath function, but it seems like it will work.

Could you advise on how to alter this function, so I can point it to my Filter array action output?

outputs('Table')

I tried this in the Apply to each AccessSource loop, but it returns 0 results:

union(
	xpath(
		xml(json(concat('{"Root":{"Item":', outputs('Filter_array_-_DIFAccessRightsMatrix_Excel'),'}}'))),
		'/Root/Item/AccessSource/text()'
	),
	json('[]')
)

Do I need to throw the Filter array - DIFAccessRightsMatrix Excel output into a compose action?

Much appreciated already so far!

Maarten

Edit: This is an example of the body output of the Filter array - DIFAccessRightsMatrix Excel:

>Could you advise on how to alter this function, so I can point it to my Filter array action output?

Probably this:

body('Filter_array_-_DIFAccessRightsMatrix_Excel')

or just put the Filter's body into a Compose.

Additionally, the dots in the property names are encoded.

Hence you have to replace them in my Selet's Maps with the xml encoding of the PA encoding 😒

E.g.

xpath(
	item(),
	'string(//Roles_x005F_x002e_RoleDescription)'
)

That works like a charm, you're the best!
