Capture changes on person field

I am building an Issue tracker which needs to update an item on a person field in the list back and forth. I have tried method in this post , but it just gets stucked in an infinite loop. Could anyone please tell if there is any other method to do so?

Sure. 

 

In looking at your other post, and the screenshot, it looks like you were trying to apply that here. Is it your preference to have "Assigned To" and "Previously Assigned To"? (I think that would tell users what is happening better than Assigned To 2).


There is another way, though. Let me show you that way, and then you can tell me if you prefer the 2 Assignee column method.

 

You can still trigger "When an item or file is modified". 

But now, right after, you would add an action called "Get changes for an item or file (properties only)"


This makes it easy - it shows us column by column, what has changed. 

We set up the action like this:

All the formula is doing is looking at 1 version prior to this, so it can compare. This should do the trick in a typical list, but if you've changed versioning, then you'd want to adapt this.

 

sub(int(triggerOutputs()?['body/{VersionNumber}']),1)

And I can see in the "Output" after it's run, that after modifying my assignee, it can tell it - specifically - has changed.
 
(My changed field is AssignedTo0)

And it's easy to use, too - your dynamic content will now have "Has Column Changed: Assigned To" as a selection, and it will evaluate to true or false. If false, no action needed. If true, email the Assigned To column. 

 

.............. now, a caveat, I did this as recent as yesterday successfully, but for some reason my "Get Changes" action isn't giving me the "Has column changed" dynamic contents....... and I have no clue why........ but hopefully you won't have the same issue. Hoping this isn't a random update.

Hi there,

I'm not sure I understand. Can you please give a breakdown of your scenario? Is it like Person A submits an item, Person B is the Assignee -- Person B fills it out, and updates the Assignee - and you only want it to send Teams Chat if the Assignee is different than it was previously?

Yes, something like this. Because it is an issue tracker, there will be 2 people discussing around this item. Once Person A updates other fields and changes assginees to Person B, Person B should get a notice like emails or message from flow bot. Similarly, when Person B responses about the previous update, Person A should get a message. They will change the asignee so on until Person B updates the status (a choice filed) of this item as "closed" which means there is no need to have further updates.

Awesome! This is exactly I want. 

I think maybe you need to hard coded by json in this case. For example, if I use "Post an adaptive card and wait for a response" action, and someone submits a response, I also cannot get the dynamic content of this response. But I can get the response by using embedded expression as below. Hope this could help.

That's a good point - I can definitely do it that way as well. 

I am just annoyed that they were all there as dynamic content for me yesterday... hahaha. Oh well! It is time for bed for me anyway 😛 Goodnight!

Hi, Rhiassuring. Sorry to bother you again. Is there any way to involve trigger condition into your flow? Because now this flow will trigger whenever there is a change, it is a little bit waste of time when I just give some comments and not yet change the asignee.

Just as an update, my Get Changes action is showing the appropriate values today. Ahh, bugs. 

@karolyuan  for your question - no bother at all - I'd probably use the Get Changes and terminate if the Assignee change is "false". I'm actually not sure if there is any way to use that in a trigger condition without using the Get Changes.. I don't think there is...   I will flag @VictorIvanidze to see if he has thoughts, he's pretty knowledgeable
