Copy File From One Sharepoint folder to Another Based on File Name

Perhaps this has already been asked and I just overlooked it. I am pretty new to power automate but hoping it can help us out.

In Sharepoint, we have a folder for all vendor invoices. File names will include vendor name_client name_inv number. All files placed into this folder will also be copied into another folder located in the client files. I would like to create a flow that will automatically copy a file placed into the vendor folder and put it into the client vendor folder.

I built a solution tonight and seems to meet the requirements you mentioned and it was successful.  Here I have a folder of vendor invoices with the file name format you described.

My flow was triggered with a button, but this could run on a trigger, "When a file is created" in this folder too and automatically launch.

Here's the flow details, it's pretty straightforward.

The key here is getting the Client name and you have a great file naming convention so it was pretty easy.

Compose Client Name Folder

split(items('Apply_to_each')?['{Name}'], '_')[1]

Lastly, you are using the Copy File action and referencing the Full path of the Vendor File and copying it into your dynamic folder.

One important note if you are not familiar with Apply to Each action/loops:

In this example, you don't have to insert this, after your Get Files (properties only), next add Copy File and then select Full Path as the file to copy, this will automatically wrap this in an Apply to Each action for you because it already knows your Get File (properties only) will have more than one file.

Add your compose after this and then drag the Copy File below compose as shown in this example.

Thank you! I feel like something may be missing but I could be wrong. At what point do I say if this file contains "client name", copy it into this folder? I know copy file will put it where I want it but I am not sure what part defines which file I want to copy. Let's say Microsoft is a client, I put a vendor invoice into the vendor invoice folder (which contains invoices from multiple vendors). The file name includes Microsoft. I want to copy any file that includes Microsoft in the file name and put it into the Microsoft client folder.

I did try the flow you have above but it breaks at the compose step. See pic for reference.

Hi @camcdaniel25 ,

I was building an example that every file in the Vendors folder contained Vendor invoices in this format:  VendorName_ClientName_InvoiceNo.abcd

So, the error is occurring because there is at least one file that doesn't have that file name convention.  To answer your previous question, the flow will put invoices in a folder named VendorName_ClientName_InvoiceNo.abcd (client name).  Example:  if there one hundred different vendors for the client Microsoft, every one of those will get copied to Microsoft folder.

This also assumes the Client folders already exist.  In OneDrive, if the folder doesn't exist, it will be created automatically for you.  In SharePoint, you have to create it if it doesn't exist (and that's an extra flow step).
