Download PDF

Hi All,

I have created a word document and converted it to PDF using the 2 word connectors.  The PDF document is saved to Sharepoint.

How do I download the PDF document to the users local machine after generation?

Is it easier if I save in OneDrive?

I know this has been discussed before but I can't find a solution.

Thanks for your help.

hi @CrispinSteele

You can try following URL to see the what it behavior, I will turn the flow on for some period.

 https://prod-30.japaneast.logic.azure.com:443/workflows/2c17ae7ef9104eb78df8a7bb010e8396/triggers/ma...

Following are two other steps for you reference.

First, use "http get" for trigger,

1.HttpGet.png

Then get sample file for response, the sample is get from share point but you can from anywhere

2.GetSampleFileAnd3ResponseFile.png

Perfect!!  I have created the link which works for me from my end in a new flow and have an HTTP Get request which brings the file data across is there a way to open the url automatically.

Thanks again for your patience...I am an over enthusiastic amateur!!

Hello @CrispinSteele

You can't download the generated PDF document in the user local machine. You could send to the user the link to the item, the item itself (by email, for example), or save it on their OneDrive (if you have permissions on the users' OneDrive account).

Hope it helps!

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.  That is annoying.  I thought that it could be done using a HTTP Get request or something.  So is there anything that can be used to achieve the result?

In my flow the user is anonymous and cannot be emailed so it seems a natural step to open the newly created PDF in their browser/viewer.

I am a novice - but like to play with these things.  Perhaps I am using the wrong terminology. Can the file be opened or viewed.  Below is my FLOW including the HTTP request I was trying to build which I thought helped.

Thanks again all 🙂

What about following? if you flow trigger type support "Response".

ReturnFile.png

Hi @CrispinSteele ,

You could create the file in your local with "File system" connector, you need to instore the Gateway and create the connection to a local path with the file system connector.

I would suggest that you could instore an onedrive in your local pc and you could read the document directly from the OneDrive, it is easier.

Best regards,

@MinRao

Apologies if it is obvious - but could you expand the other 2 steps as well and I will see if I can recreate.

Many thanks

Hello @CrispinSteele

Just a quick note that you make take into account. Power Automate flows execution time is indeterministic... So maybe one flow execution lasts for 10 seconds, for example, and maybe another one lasts for a couple of minutes. That's the reason you normally should think about "asynchronous processes" when using Power Automate.

Hope it helps!

@fchopo Thank you.  I was planning to add a few Delay steps in the flow before going 'live' for those reasons.  But it is always good to hear it up front.

Many thanks

Please accept as solution for others for refer if that helps you.

@CrispinSteele

@MinRao

Thanks for the solution for the URL which downloads the file.

Is there anyway to open the URL from within FLOW or is it a case that the URL will manually have to be either clicked as a hyperlink or pasted in a browser to action the download event?

Cris

@CrispinSteele

I assume "Download" means from browser which require user operation,  could you please let me know, what you want to get file from and download to where ?

If you want to just get file inside other flow, I think you do not need http get trigger , and you can run as child flow maybe ? then it can be called from other flow and response file to other flow.

@MinRao

Your right again - I have been doing a lot of reading and playing around.  I think I know what I need - but not sure how to do it.

I have set up a child flow which works as you provided details previously.

Upload1.png

What I now need is for the file indentifier  to be dynamic - to add the name of the pdf or docx document that was created in the parent flow.  How do I pass the file name from parent to child?  As the file name the user creates will change each time.

Parent partial step after .docx and .pdf documents have been created.

Upload2.png

If the "http" in you screenshot is the call to get file,  why not define filename in post body

HttpPost.png

@MinRao

Please bear with me - I do not know what I need to do.  I have expanded the Parent Flow:

And the Child Flow Here:

If you can give a little more help it is very much appreciated.
