Excel File Updated - Send Teams Message/Email

Hello,

I am trying to build a flow where if someone updates an excel file on our SharePoint page, it will send a Teams Message to our channel or email someone to perform the next step.

I am getting an error code that this is a BadRequest and "This operation is for internal use only". I don't get that because I am just sharing a message that this file was updated. How may I get around this or fix the flow?

@bamatthews7

Then I guess Sharepoint is a valid place to store your Excel file, right?

If so, you can try the following:

-Use as trigger either When a file is created or modified (properties only) or When a file is created or modified in a Folder . Please note it has some limitations compared to the triggers available in OneDrive.

-Add a condition to verify if the file name matches your excel file. If false, add a Terminate action block. If true, add your stuff (send a notification, add an item to a sharepoint list, etc)

Hope this helps

Hi
Which action block is the one that is giving the error?
Can you share a screenshot from you flow definition showing this action block inputs?
Thanx

Hello @efialttes,

The blocked action is "For a selected Row". Thanks for your help!Flow Error.PNGFlow Error 2.PNG

Re: Excel File Updated - Send Teams Message/Email

Hi!

You have added two sequential triggers to your flow, right?

I mean, your Flow is triggered via the Recurrence Trigger (every month? every day? every hour?). Then your flow will wait for the second trigger ("For a selected row") to be fired out.

But, I am not sure the purpose of "For a selected row" trigger is the one you have designed in your flow.

You can see the common way to use this Excel trigger in the following post:

https://flow.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/introducing-microsoft-flow-integration-in-excel/

I mean, in order to trigger "For a selected row" you shall select a row in your excel table, and then manually execute the Flow by manually clicking "Run Flow" in your Flow Menu. In my opinion, this manual procedure does not match with your first trigger

Hope this helps

Re: Excel File Updated - Send Teams Message/Email

Yes @efialttes that helps me better understand what that action does. I guess I should try and explain what I am trying to do.

I was previously attempting to create an item on Sharepoint by checking a OneDrive file if it has been modified. I was unsuccessful with that flow, so I tried creating this one where an email will be sent notifying the user they need to do something when the excel sheet's rows were updated on this OneDrive file.

I hope that explains what I am trying to do. Let me know if you understand and can assist!

Thanks.

Re: Excel File Updated - Send Teams Message/Email

Hi again

OneDrive or OneDrive for Business?

If OneDrive, according to its connector there are 4 different triggers to execute flows when a File is updated. Which problem did you find when trying this initial approach?

When a file is modified

This operation triggers a flow when a file is modified in a folder.

When a file is modified

This operation triggers a flow when a file is modified in a folder.

When a file is modified (properties only)

This operation triggers a flow when a file is modified in a folder.

When a file is modified (properties only)

This operation triggers a flow when a file is modified in a folder.

Re: Excel File Updated - Send Teams Message/Email

@efialttes I did when a file is modified in the OneDrive for Business, but the issue was I am unable to find the proper folder. It is taking me to my OneDrive Business files, not the shared library I want to find the file in.

Re: Excel File Updated - Send Teams Message/Email

@efialttes That fixed the issue! I am now able to send an email when the file in that folder is modified!

I really appreciate your help and hope you can assist in one more area. I never got this one solved and I mentioned it earlier in our messages that I want to create an item when that file is modified. Please refer to my other post and check out the details of that issue! https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/Building-Flows/Add-Excel-rows-to-create-item-on-SharePoint/m-p/3...
