Extracting 8 digit numbers from JSON (Output from "recognize text in an image or PDF"_

Hi,

Apologies if this seems dumb, I can do this in powershell, but have a requirement to use PA instead.

Essentially I have a 2 page PDF as a sample (some PDF will contain more pages, although could be jpg in same format as PDF occasionally) and the pages each have a number at the top that I need to extract from each page. Occasionally a page will not have a number at that top, dont care about these pages! The number will ALWAYS be 8 digits and will ALWAYS be at the absolute top of the page if that helps.

I have used "recognize text in an image or pdf document" and that spits out JSON in the below format. (8 digit numbers appear twice on each page, the top number is the easiest as it will always be first on each page)

  }
]

Then an apply to each to pick out the extracted text and append it to an array variable.

When I compose this, obviously all the text data including the body of the PDF is included in the array.

dmgc_1-1695726834570.png

Is there any way to extract or even filter the array to just the first number from each page (hopefully without duplicates)? So it looks like;
[
"43431212",
"12341234"
]

Many thanks 🙂

Hello @dmgc,

Don't use apply to each to extract such data. There are more efficient ways to extract the text from such JSONs. But in your requirement you don't want to extract this information. You only want the first line of each page. This could be done like that:

Matthy79_0-1695735025442.png

So no apply to each and just one action after the ai action. You have to put the result of the ai action at "From". To only get single values (not key value pair) you have to switch to text mode when using the Select action.

Of course you can use expressions to check if the values found fits your requirement (@Expiscornovus provided a sample expression for that).

Hi @dmgc,

You could use an isInt function to check if the contents of the text property of an item is a number in the lines array.

Try something like below in a Filter Array action

@equals(isInt(item()['text']), true)

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion, I have just tried this but I am getting an error where the data in the array is string. Am i missing something silly?

Thanks!

Hi @Matthy79,

In the example payload which was shared page 2 also had a number on the last line item? So, not sure you only want to use the first line item of each item 😅

Btw, if you want to avoid apply to each actions you could also convert the json to xml and use xpath.

Hello @Expiscornovus

I always use xpath to do that but in that case it is not needed. The requirement is to get the number (it will always be at the top of each page). Using select I have grab all pages and within that I only need the first line. That is why first works for that. The number is also somewhere else in the text but the requirement was also that it shouldn't be more than once so the top position is the best way to find it.

Hi @Matthy79,

Yes, that is a good point. If the number on one of the other lines on the same page is always the same as the number of the first line there would be no point in using either xpath or filtering each line 👍
