Flow saves attachments inconsistently to Dataverse

Hello,

I am using Power Automate to retrieve attachments from an email received, creating a record for the email in the Email/Email Messages table in Dataverse. Then, for each attachment, I create a record in the Attachment table in dataverse and relating each record to the email.

The issue is that for some file formats like .jpeg, .pdf, .docx, .xlsx the flow throws an error sometimes when I save the Attachment Body from the email in the Body file of the Attachment Dataverse table. Sometimes, it works with no problem at all and I can't figure out what is different because I use the same files to do the testing. Here is my configuration of the "Add a new row" for the Attachments table:

bstroescu_0-1648144321843.png

Below is the error message in the action:

  "error": {
    "code""0x80040216",
"message""The attachment body should be a valid Base 64 string"

If this would be a consistent error, I would be able to figure out what I'm doing wrong but sometimes the flow works with the exact same files while other times it does not.

Any advice would be helpful

Hi all,

After trying a few things, I ended up creating one attachment file of .eml type that contains the email received and all the attachments.

I use the "Export email (V2)" action using the Message Id from the trigger "When a new email arrives in a shared mailbox (V2)". Entering a value for Original Mailbox Address is optional, but I did it anyway. This converts the original message to an .eml type file.

Then, I use "Add a new row" to the Attachment table in Dataverse (first option in the dropdown, not the second since there are two).
Attachments(Attachments): has expression string('')

Attachment Number: I put it as 1.

Entity: I selected custom value and typed 'email'

Item(Email Messages): I want to relate the record to the Email Messages table so I put emails(outputs('Add_a_new_Email_Record')?['body/activityid']). The outputs('Add_a_new_Email_Record')?['body/activityid'] is the dynamic content of the GUID from a previous action called "Add a new Email Record" where I populate the email table with a record.

Body: Here I entered base64(body('Export_email_(V2)')) in an expression because the output of the Export email(V2) is for an .eml type file, but needs to be converted to base64

File Name: I used the dynamics content of the Subject and added '.eml' so the correct extension is recognized for the file. It can be whatever you want as long as you add '.eml'

Mime Type: For an .eml type file it has to be 'application/octet-stream'

Subject: It can be whatever you want.

Hi @bstroescu,

Attachments will need to encoded as a base64 string before being saved. You can use the base64 expression on the attachment item to do so.

Hi @bstroescu ,

Here you need to convert into Base64

base64(items('Apply_t0_each_add_Attachment')?['contentBytes']

Hi @ChrisPiasecki , @Ahammad_Riyaz

I applied the base64() expression as you guys suggested :

bstroescu_0-1648215553017.png

The files did attach, but:

- .pdf file is not openable

- .xlsx file is not openable

- .docx file is not openable

- .jpg file is not openable

- .csv file is openable but the text inside the file is converted to base64:

These files would get saved correctly before when I didn't apply the base64() expression and just left it as items('Apply_to_each-Attachments')?['contentBytes']. The problem was the flow would sometimes fail, while other times it would work fine without explanation.

Hello everybody,

today I experienced the same issue while I was working for a customer. The scenario is only slightly different, cause I don't have the chance to add "Export email (V2)" action (there's no Office subscription in this tenant).

I finally managed to came across it changing the input value of body in the similar "Add attachment" action

from:

base64(items('For_every_file')?['ContentBytes'])

to:

base64(outputs('Compose_body'))

where the action "Compose_body" input is:

{
        "$content-type""application/octet-stream",
        "$content""@items('For_every_file')?['ContentBytes']"
}

and obviously "For_every_file" is the loop against the e-mail's attachments.

Hope it helps someone else 😉

@Pound can you clarify the compose step a bit?
I tried the same by adding a compose, but I still get the same inconsistency, where it is not possible  for me to save a jpg as attachement. It is added to the table, but once trying to open it it says file not supported.

Sure,

as you can see in the picture I've specified $content-type and $content members, in the arbitrary object:

Pound_0-1689751340969.png

and then I decoded it, to create the attachment body:

Pound_1-1689752039815.png

As I can see in the screenshot you posted, the object you're composing is incomplete.

Hope it helps

@Pound Thank you, this seems to be working!! Do not uderstand why we would need this step, but anyhow now it works, so that is nice! 🙂

I'm glad to hear you finally worked it out!

I suggest you to read this document https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-apps/developer/data-platform/attachment-annotation-files?tab... which gives you some hints about attachments in Dataverse.

Best regards

Good stuff mate, this worked perfectly!
