Formatting tables in a flow email

Am working on a flow based on 'Email me with a list of upcoming Calendar events'  & I am trying to get the table in the email to have alternate row colours .   The typical way to do this is to use :nth-child  or :nth-of-type in the css definition.

I can use the following selectors to prove I can select rows or cells in css.  The following options  select ALL Table cells, and set them all to the same colour :

tr {
background-color: #f2f2f2;

tr td {
background-color: red;

 td {
background-color: blue;

However, when I try the variants with :nth child or nth of type, they all fail

tr:nth-of-type(2) {
background-color: red;

tr:nth-child(2) {
background-color: blue;

tr:nth-child(odd) {
background-color: blue;

These are all as the last line in the style area of the email html in 'send an email'.  I have also tried variants with
background instead of background-color.

Is this a bug? or do I need some other way to get this working.  Thank you.
