Get members of an Exchange distribution list in Power Automate

Hello,

Distribution lists are very common in my company. I don't know if there are stored on Exchange or M365 or AD, for me it is just a name represent several e-mail addresses, and are not AD security group.

My question is if it is possible to extract the email address of each member of a distribution list in Power Automate (free version)? That would be very helpful.  Thanks in advance.

You can use the Microsoft Graph to send an HTTP request to get the members of a group. You can explore this at Graph Explorer | Try Microsoft Graph APIs - Microsoft Graph. Expand the Groups section and you want the one for Direct members of a group with count. Deepak Shrivastava has a good YouTube video explaining how to us the Graph API at https://youtu.be/yGYmgY3OgXk

@David_MA ,

Thanks for introducing MS Graph for me; but may I be more direct here?

The above is the Outlook 365 Send HTTP request action of Power Automate.

In my case I have a distribution list (remember, it is NOT an AD group) called MailingList@abc.com. What information should I fill in to get the members of that distribution list? ... specifically, what is the URL? outlook.office.com ?

Please advise further.

Distribution lists are a group in Azure AD. I tested the MS Graph with one of my DLs and it returned the members. You need to know the ID of the group, which can be obtained by searching for the group in https://portal.azure.com

Thanks for your response.

I am just an ordinary business user who happens need to use Power Automate to carry out some task.... How can I obtain the "ID" of a distribution list?

By the way, the distribution list used in my PA flow is supplied by a user which means it can be different for each flow run ...

If you don't have access to https://portal.azure.com at your company, I would contact your IT department to see if they can look it up for you. Otherwise, hopefully someone else will post a different way that you can get what you need.

I have not had to deal with anything where the DL I need for a particular solution is not the same one.

@David_MA

Please ignore my previous message as I must admit that I hadn't read your message carefully before replying back.

Thanks for introducing portal.azure.com to me, and I could grab the Group ID of the group I want, which is readily seen on the URL:

But unforturnately I don't have necessary admin right to view its members:

Thanks for your guidance anyway. By the way, how could I get the Group ID of a distribution list in Power Automate?

@David_MA

Please ignore the message about how to get a Group ID from portal.azure.com. Sorry.

My question is now how to get that Id in Power Automate; because every time the flow run the distribution list can be different. Thanks.

I have not had to deal with a solution where the DL varies with each run of the flow. Maybe someone else has encountered that and has a solution.

I have had the same experience, and abandoned Power Automate for that reason. I think the variability of your results is probably due to the Graph returning results before it has finished executing the query. I've seen this with queries made using Express.js, and know there's a way to accommodate it actual javascript, but have no idea how to implement that in Power Automate's visual programming paradigm. The official PA doc doesn't provide any clue I can find. Maybe someone with some Power Automate expertise will know.
