Identify unique values from a Dataverse table

Hello everyone,

I have a Dataverse Table1 with several columns (BaseYear, FactorName, FactorValue, FactorHistYear). The combination of FactorValue and FactorHistYear give numerous rows of data where BaseYear and FactorName stay the same.

I want to use power automate to parse through this table and return a list of the unique combinations of BaseYear and FactorName. I need the output to be written to another Dataverse Table2.

Any ideas?

Hi @AAI,

Thanks for sharing a bit more details about your table. If we are talking about a couple of million rows I am not sure a List rows action (with its limitations) is the best way to approach this.

Have you considered using a dataflow with Power Query instead? That might be able to handle that amount of rows a bit better:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-query/dataflows/overview-dataflows-across-power-platform-dyn...

Edit: Below is a simplified example.

1. The dataflow

dataflow_example.png

2. A Power Query to remove duplicates based on the combination of two columns

let
  Source = CommonDataService.Database("<orgid>.crm11.dynamics.com"),
  #"Navigation 1" = Source{[Schema = "dbo", Item = "crca4_factor"]}[Data],
  #"Removed duplicates" = Table.Distinct(#"Navigation 1", {"crca4_baseyear", "crca4_factorname"})
in
  #"Removed duplicates"

3. Loading that data into an existing table and mapping the source to destination columns

testentity_load.png

4. Example of dataflow refresh history run with upserts (with updated rows and inserted rows).

Hi @AAI

You can pass the result of "List rows" action in the "Select" action & create an array with FactorValue & FactorHistYear fields.

Next, add an expression to get the unique combinations from the output array of Select action. Expression used for getting the unique combinations:

union(body('Select'),body('Select'))

The output of compose action will give the required array.

If this helps & solves your problem, please remember to give a 👍 and accept my solution as it will help others in the future.

Thanks

Hi @AAI,

Alternatively to @ManishSolanki his nice solution you can also try to use FetchXml with a Distinct.

https://markcarrington.dev/2020/04/03/inside-fetchxml-pt-9-distinct/

Below is an example

I have added the factorid as an alias and used the baseyear for this. Otherwise you would get the Key properties cannot have null values error which is caused by a missing primary key column. If you would add the actual factorid primary key column every row would be unique and the distinct would return all the rows, which would make the fetchxml query pointless, lol 😁

Found that trick in this blog: https://ryanmaclean365.com/2020/02/11/quick-tip-resolving-error-retrieving-teams-via-fetchxml-with-l...

<fetch distinct="true">
  <entity name="crca4_factor">
   <attribute name="crca4_baseyear" alias="crca4_factorid" />
    <attribute name="crca4_baseyear" />
    <attribute name="crca4_factorname" />
  </entity>
</fetch>

As I know "Distinct" function has a limitation of 500 rows to process from the table. I actually used this function in Canvas page to list unique combination in Gallery there but it didn't work for the whole set of data (Table1 can be up to several millions of rows...) that's why I am trying to find a workaround to figure out these uniques....

Hello! Thank you for a good tip! I am going to try it now!

Best regards,

Alexandra

Thank you! I did work!

Now I have a dataflow in my solution. Do you know any side effects having such a dataflow (that is reading from Dev dataverse table and has to be transferred to Test and then to Prod environments)?
