Iteration to Assign User to next item

I have a list that i would like to have assign a user per item submitted to the list.

ADMIN list - a list of 4 people

Person A

Person B

Person C

Person D

Resolution List - per row item submission, the flow is to assign "next" up from the ADMIN list.  Would like for it to iterate thru the ADMIN list with next person.  so first item would go to Person A, then another submission would go to Person B, etc.... then once it gets to Person D and assignment, the 5th submission would start all over with Person A.  Basically a continuing loop.  Can someone tell me how to do this please?

Hi!

This is a classical problem when programming. Let's assume you have 4 colleagues your tasks will be assigned to.

Add an 'Initialize variable' action block, type array, name myAssigneesArray, value:

["a@mycompany.com","b@mycompany.com","c@mycompany.com","d@mycompany.com"]

THen you need to add an apply to each and assign as its input your task list.

Now, if you are familiar with WDL functions, I would suggest to have a look to mod().

So you need an unique index assigned to each item starting with 1.

SP list? In such a case, and assuming no item was never deleted, you can use ID standard column from your SP list as the index.

Then just need to apply mod() its first argument will be the current task list item index; its second argument number 4 (since there are 4 potential asignees). The result of this calculation will be 0,1,2 or 3. You can add the expression to a Compose action block inside your 'Apply to each', lets call it 'Compose_currentPointer'. Assuming a tasks are stored in a Sharepoint List

mod(item()?['ID'],4)

Now, you can extract the target asignee email by means of the following expression

variables('myAssigneeArray')[outputs('Compose_currentPointer')]

Hope this helps

 sir and thank you for replying....

here is a screenshot.  i added the initialize variable array with names....  per the condition, i am creating a item in a SP list.  not sure on the next steps with the mod as you describe.  is it a apply to before the apply to to create the item?

cnorris135_0-1600391660306.png

does anyone have any followup here..... been struggling to make this work all day....

Hi!

I believe your condition action block has as its input the list of tasks to be evaluated right?

And also the te goal of the Condition action block is to evaluate if a single task failed (and shoud be assigned to somebody) right?And 'Create item' is for the purpose of creating an item in a new list to assign the task to somebody, right?

If so I would do the opposite: do not add the 'Apply to each' inside the 'Condition' action block true branch, but... add the Condition action block inside the 'Apply to each' and 'Create item' inside the 'Condition' true branch. Now, inside the 'Condition' true branch and just before 'Create item' you can add your Compose action block, lets call it 'Compose_currentPointer'. Assuming a tasks are stored in a Sharepoint List

mod(item()?['ID'],4)

Now, you can extract the target asignee email by means of the following WDL expression and assign it to the input on 'Create item' where you need to stored the selected Assignee

variables('myAssigneeArray')[outputs('Compose_currentPointer')]

Please let us know your progress!

ill try and break this down....

1.) i have a basic sharepoint list (Audit) for capturing info..... person fills out form and it submits the form and it populates columns in the Audit list.

2.) i had a second list called (Resolution) that basically if in the Audit list, one of the columns (status) is marked "Fail", it will create an item in the Resolution list and hopefully auto assign a user.

with the apply to each before the condition, im assuming you are to use the initialized variable "

myAssigneeArray

 for the output of the Apply to???

there is no "task" list.  Just one Parent list (Audit) and a child (Resolution) list.  what i am trying to accomplish is when the item is created in the Resolution list, it will automatically assign the "next" person in that list of four people i mentioned.  that is where im struggling.  this list (Resolution) is already an existing list with i would say about 100 entries.  some have been deleted in the past so the IDs are not 1,2,3,4,5,6..... but prolly 1,2,4,6 etc..... would this still work?

cnorris135_1-1600790723952.png

Thanx for the explanation!

So, your flow is executed when an item is created in Resolution list, right?

If so, we do not need the 'Apply to each'

Inside the 'Condition' true branch and just before 'Create item' I would add a Compose action block, lets call it 'Compose_currentPointer', and assign it the following expression:

mod(triggerBody()?['ID'],4)

Now, you can extract the target asignee email by means of the following WDL expression and assign it to the input on 'Create item' where you need to stored the selected Assignee

variables('myAssigneeArray')[outputs('Compose_currentPointer')]

Please let us know your progress!

ive been trying to get this to work but im getting a:

InvalidTemplate. Unable to process template language expressions in action 'Compose_currentPointer' inputs at line '1' and column '15918': 'The template language expression 'mod(item()?['ID'],4)' cannot be evaluated because property 'ID' cannot be selected. Property selection is not supported on values of type 'String'. Please see https://aka.ms/logicexpressions for usage details.'.

followed your steps...... why is it throwing this error you think??

Hi!

Now I see clearer what the problem is. THanx for the screenshots!

So I was assuming you were performing some sort of 'Get items'... but that is not your scenario. So, you do not need an 'Apply to each', just move 'Condition action block out of it and replace the WDL expression in 'Compose' action block by using this instead:

mod(triggerBody()?['ID'],4)

Next, extract the target asignee email by means of the following WDL expression and assign it to the input on 'Create item' where you need to stored the selected Assignee

variables('myAssigneeArray')[outputs('Compose_currentPointer')]

Hope this helps
