Notifying users when Sharepoint List Item updated in a specific way

I have a Sharepoint List and would like to notify users when the Status is changed from "New" to "Marketing Review".  I only want this to happen when the status is changed, not every time the list item is saved.

As far as I can tell, I can only choose to notify when the record is updated, not when a particular column is updated.  My idea for a solution to this is to have a column "notify_mkt_review" set to false, then

When item is created or modified

    If Status = Marketing Review && notify_mkt_review = false

       Send the email

       Set notify_mkt_review = true

I'm struggling with the update of notify_mkt_review

I choose Sharepoint > "Update Item" but it seems to make me want to update EVERY field for the item, I just want to update notify_mkt_review.  Is this really necessary?  Is there another way?

The UPdate Item action only requires that you fill in required fields and any fields you want to change.  If you leave fields blank they will stay at their current values.
