"Update Item" Not Updating SharePoint Item

Hello! 

 

I have two SharePoint lists: "Requests" and "RequestMessages". RequestMessages uses a lookup column to associate messages with the request that they belong to:

I have created a PowerAutomate flow that generates a RequestNumber whenever a new Request is created in the Requests list, then uses UpdateItem to assign the RequestNumber that was generated to the new Request. The flow runs successfully, and I can see in the "Inputs" section of the UpdateItem block that it's finding the right Request. However, nothing shows up in the RequestNumber field in the Requests list. 

 

Now, what's REALLY bizarre to me is the fact that the RequestNumber DOES show up in the RequestMessages list as a "link". When I click on that link, it opens a side window that shows the correct associated Request. But the RequestNumber field is still empty. 

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to set the ID column of the SharePoint list in lookup column. As an example:

here, am setting the 'LookupCol' field to an ID column of the list which is being looked upon.

 

In your flow, the variable Request# should contains the valid ID column value from the Requests List item to which it refers to.

I'm sorry, I'm a bit confused. The Lookup column is in RequestMessages, and it's referencing a column in Requests. The correct value is appearing in the Lookup column, but not in the column that's being referenced. Are you saying that I need to have two UpdateItem blocks - one to update the column, and another to update the Lookup column? 

  1. How is the RequestMessages "link" column filled? Like the column in RequestMessages that has the correct Request# as a link. How is that column populated or filled? Is that column being filled by a separate flow or create item flow?
  2. In the Request list, what type of column is "RequestNumber"? Is it a number column, single line text, multiline text?
  3. What is the full expression of your concat() in the variable Request#? Is that variable blank or filled? I'm trying to check if the variable expression is even correct or is it making a blank that is then updating the RequestNumber column.
  4. What is the purpose of the "Get Items" step? Unless you are doing something to more/other items in the Request list, then why do you have a "Get Items" step?

1. Neither. In RequestMessages, I simply have the RequestNumber column configured as a LookUp column that references the RequestNumber column that's in the Requests list. 

2. RequestNumber is a single line text.

3. I can see that when my flow runs, the variable Request# is being set to the correct value. 

4. To be honest, I'm not sure exactly why I added this. I think I found an online resource that told me to do it "just to be safe", which doesn't really make any sense. 

 

I was eventually able to get this working. If I knew how I did it, I would share my solution, but it seemed as if it just "decided" to start working overnight.

Summer of Solutions | Week 4 Results | Winners will be posted on July 24th

We are excited to announce the Summer of Solutions Challenge!    This challenge is kicking off on Monday, June 17th and will run for (4) weeks.  The challenge is open to all Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate, Copilot Studio & Power Pages) community members. We invite you to participate in a quest to provide solutions to as many questions as you can. Answers can be provided in all the communities.    Entry Period: This Challenge will consist of four weekly Entry Periods as follows (each an “Entry Period”)   - 12:00 a.m. PT on June 17, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on June 23, 2024 - 12:00 a.m. PT on June 24, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on June 30, 2024 - 12:00 a.m. PT on July 1, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on July 7, 2024 - 12:00 a.m. PT on July 8, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on July 14, 2024   Entries will be eligible for the Entry Period in which they are received and will not carryover to subsequent weekly entry periods.  You must enter into each weekly Entry Period separately.   How to Enter: We invite you to participate in a quest to provide "Accepted Solutions" to as many questions as you can. Answers can be provided in all the communities.
