"User Not Found" Error Should Not Fail Entire Flow

I have a Get User Profile step that will sometimes not be able to find the user, returning a "User Not Found" error.  I have a run after step that kicks in on failure and performs other actions, as it is expected that the user will not always be found.  The problem is the entire flow is marked as failed because of this.  If I have error trapping set up, why is this the case?  How do I prevent the entire flow from being marked as failed?

Use a specific RunAfter step and set a variable to signify the error that took place.  Then at the end do a condition to check if that is set.  If it is terminate successfully, otherwise let it end normally.  That's the best you are going to get.

If you want it to end successfully even if there is an error then you can add a terminate action at the end and set it to successful.

Thanks, but I do want the flow to fail if any other step fails.  It's just this one that I have handled and should report successful, ideally only if the error is "User Not Found".  Can the terminate action only be set to successful on certain errors?

Hi @Pstork1.  Thanks for the help.  I've gotten farther, but I'm struggling with the final step - maybe you can help.  Here's what I have set up:

  1. Created two variables, one boolean to state if there is an error.  Another is a string to capture the error.
  2. Not knowing how to capture the error, I created a scope for the Get User Profile step (based on this post).
  3. Set the Run After on failure step to set the error variable to true and capture the error via the "result('Scope_-_Try')" expression.
  4. Set a condition at the end of my flow to check if the error variable is true and if the error message contains "User not found".  If that is the case, Terminate successfully.

The problem I'm having is that the final condition check isn't running.  It's complicated by the fact that before it I have two parallel branches, depending on if the user is found or not.  Then, each of those branches has a parallel branch at the end, depending on if the SharePoint list item was created or not (see attached screenshot).  At first, I was getting a message that the condition was only triggered by the first parallel action.  I then edited the Run After setting for the condition, making sure that all of the branches were covered.  After that change, I just get an error where the condition has no inputs, though the "Yes" branch runs.  It's whacky.

Please let me know if there's a better when to handle this!  Thanks!

IN the Run after settings for the Condition at that end make sure that it is set to run if Send Failure Email is Skipped or Successful, and not just Successful.  Each path will be evaluated in the run after and if you have a setting to run after something is Successful and its skipped instead then that action (the condition) won't run.

Thanks, but I already have that set up (pasted below in case you didn't see the screenshot in my last post). The run after is set for every possible parallel action for successful, failed or skipped.

When the flow runs, the condition doesn't execute because there are "no inputs", though you can see one of the email actions completed successfully.

This is what the condition looks like:

Ukiman1014_2-1672331262260.png

The condtion is just checking varialbles set earlier in the flow, it's not really dependant on any of the email actions.  Maybe I can just insert a "filler" action, like Compose, before the condition. Not sure why I would have to do that but 🤷🏻‍♂️.

What are the run after settings on the Send a Failure Email.  The error message is clear that something isn't set to run when skipped and that's the problem. It may just be a step earlier.

Okay, the end result is working as intended, but something still does not seem right.   To make things simpler, I created scopes for both parallel branches. At first, the last step wasn't running because the Run After was only set to successful for both branches, so I set them to successful or skipped for both.  If the branch runs where the user is found, the condition executes.  If the branch runs where the user is not found (this is the run after failure branch) the condition says "no input" but the terminate successfully executes as though it did.  So the logic is working currently even though "no input" perists.

I had also tried moving the condition further up, placing it within the "No User Found" scope, but I was still getting "no inputs".  It seems to have something to do with the Get User Profile step (which is in it's own "Try" scope) failing.

I guess a true test would be to have Get User Profile fail for some reason other than "User not found" to see if the Yes side of the condition still executes.

I suspect part of the problem is the use of the scope on the failure side.  I think your condition is running, but the error variable is not being set.  Look inside the scopes and see what the variables are being set to, if anything.  I suspect they aren't being set its just using the values they are initialized with.

The variable is being set okay.

Not sure what is going on.  But the condition is definitely not checking against the variables being set in that branch.  I'm not sure why.

Agreed.  There seems to be something with the internal logic - something that's not exposed via the interface - that's causing this behavior.  Unfortunately, I can't open a Microsoft support ticket for this as they just close them stating Power Automate is its own separate animal (from a support perspective).  I've opened tickets/cases with them (Power Automate) in the past but they never go anywhere.  🤷🏻‍♂️
