update excel row dynamically - don't have 'PROVIDE THE ITEM PROPERTIES' option

hi!! i'm building a flow and i need to update the rows of my table depending on a dynamic variable. I've searched some info and I've seen everyone has the option 'Provide the item properties' and they can write there a JSON with the fields to update, but when I use the action 'Update a row' i just see my columns and don't have the chance to fill dynamically.

Can you help me with this please?? 😞 thanks!!

You can fill the column values with dynamic content that is generated or retrieved elsewhere in the flow just like you filled in the key value. Where is the dynamic information coming from that you want to use to update the table?

If I have answered your question, please mark your post as Solved.
If you like my response, please give it a Thumbs Up.

I want to establish dynamically the headers where I'll put the dynamic info.

I have an array with these concepts

and in each iteration y want to fill one of them. I've seen other people has this option:

and i think it can be used for that but i dont see it in my options...

I hope I have explained myself well.

Thanks a lot!

Hi Irenesol,

It is a little bit difficult to answer because some information is missing.

For starters, what kind of variable is it you are using, string? array?

How is your flow set up, what trigger do you have, where and how do you initialize your variable?

Where does the information come from that you want to update into the table, or which information shall be put there?

If possible, share a picture of your whole flow and what exactly you want to achieve.

Sometimes, variables or dynamic content are not shown as available inside a loop or when they don't have the required format for the input field.

What you can do in this case is to write an expression to access the data, for example variables('Numero') as an input to an analyse JSON action. If I understand it correctly, cou want to update a row in excel specified by the value of the variable.

Maybe the only thing you need to do is add something like variables('Numero')?['value'] to select the property of your variable defining the row. Or maybe you don't even need a variable because you can directly access the value from the trigger.

So please update the information provided and I am happy to try to help 🙂

i'll try to explain myself better...

my flow start getting from an excel some billable concepts and bills that use these concepts using an http request.

i'm saving the billable concepts that i get from the excel file in an array.

Later, for each bill, i add a row into my table adding just the number of the bill and the name of my client.

For each bill, I have to do an http request to get the lines of the bill, where there are specified the billable concepts of each bill.

Then, for each line of the bill, i got the billable concept, and for each billable concept of my previous array that i got from another excel, i'm trying to check if both are the same in some iteration. When them are the same, I want to update the row of the bill i created before and, dynamically, set in the flow the column of the table that i want to update.

Currently I only have static column names so I can't update depending on my previous condition.

If you still have any questions, tell me. Thank you so much!

Okay, my head is smoking now trying to understand what you want to achieve 🙂

I have very mixed experiences using array variables in power automate, they are cumbersome to handle.

If I understand correctly, you are saving a bill number and customer name to an array and want to use this information in the subsequent write to excel action. Where do you use the HTTP request?

From the looks of it you are trying to have the contents of the array as an input for the key, which doesn't work. Instead you could use variables('name_of_your_variable']?['item_containing_bill_number'] or better: Use another "select" or "filter" action to display the current contents of the array variable and make them available as dynamic content.

Another approach would be to not append to an array at all but instead to write/update each row in an iterative loop instead. Something like after the extract action place a loop with the output from the previous action as input, then a condition checking if the input is equal and when its not create an http request followed by an update row action to write the information.

I found that power automate more often than not handles better with this kind of setup over a setup with array variables.

To better understand how to transform the current flow into an iterative loop it might help to have every action and condition as an overview picture or several pictures. Though since you already built such an advanced flow I suppose you already have an idea how to do it if you choose to do so.

im really sorry hahahaha i'm spanish and maybe i dont express myself properly.

i don't have any problem accessing to the number of the bill or something like that.

i just need to access to my header columns dynamycally. i dont even know if its possible

example: i have a line in my bill that has the concept 'Mantenimiento Clinicalges' (you can see this header name in my screenshot) and all these concepts are in an array like this

'Mantenimiento Clinicalges',

'Licencia Uso Clinicalges hasta 5 usuarios',

for each concept, i want to update the row of the appropriate bill and specify which column i want to edit depending on the header...

i'm choosing this way because i want to add new concepts in the future without making modifications in my flow

I see the problem, the information you need is within the array? Then a select action could help or custom expressions within each header line selecting the appropriate content within the array like I wrote before.

Dynamic content to fill in the fields must be specified out of the array first, you cannot select properties from within the array as dynamic content as you can with other actions.

Regular Visitor

the real problem is that i want to specify dinamically in each iteration what field i want to update, i dont have any problem accesing to the info of the array

If I understand you correctly, then I am afraid there is no out of the box solution.

So for example, if thre is a value for 'Mantenimiento Clinicalges' you want to write in that column, if you have something in "licencia uso" then write there etc.?

If so, there is no way I know of to do an evaluation of the dynamic outcomes within the update row action itself.

What you can do instead is to create a set of conditions where you specify what to write where in which scenario. Which depending on the number of conditions that may occur could be a tedious task, but when it solves the problem I would consider it.

However, I am nothing but a user myself, so there might be another solution we both are not aware of.

yea i have a flow where i do things just like you say, but i was trying to improve it and i thought i could do it easily but i see that i cant... maybe someone had something to say 🤞

thanks anyway!!
