Re: App Randomly Restarts

@Mr-Dang-MSFT @komblog

Hi, I deactivated "Improved app rendering".  Now the app doesn't work at all.

Regardless which row I select in my gallery, the returned result 90% the time is always the first row of my gallery:(

Re: App Randomly Restarts

@Fellmeth, let's slow down here and not jump to any hasty actions. I did not suggest toggling off Improved app rendering for you.

For performance:

  • Page your data as described
  • Bring in only relevant rows
  • Remember: apps are not replacements for SSMS and backend tools

Some questions:

  • What exactly is inside of your galleries?
  • How many controls are in each gallery's template?
  • What kind of calls are you making in each record of the gallery? Are you doing lookups for each item in the gallery?

Big idea: remember that galleries repeat the number of controls and the formulas like lookups inside them.

I'm not understanding the context of what you wrote above. If it's not related, please start a new thread on the topic above.

Re: App Randomly Restarts

Hello Mr Dang,

Sorry, to clarify.  Komblog responded to us with a solution from "Microsoft Business Intelligence Engineer".  After havening turned off "Improved app rendering" the app ceased working properly.  I’m aware the you never suggested turning off “Improved app rendering” you were @ mentioned since you were @mentioned in the thread from Komblog

After havening turned "Improved app rendering" off, the following issue occurred:
From my iPhone, regardless of what item I were to select from my gallery the results retuned would only pertain to the first item in my gallery.  Therefore selecting the 2nd,3rd or 4th and so on item from my gallery would return the value of the 1st item.

I fully intend on integrating your paging suggestion.

My Home page Gallery is based on filtered collections gathered when starting the app.
When an item from the Home gallery is selected a page jump occurs carrying over a key that populates data in a new gallery in Screen2.
The Gallery in Screen2 pulls data from two collection. Two of the fields are using lookups, but the gallery will usually only contain less than a dozen or so item… not that much data.

The app associates contacts with projects and companies.  It’s a great way for us to quickly know who our contacts on a job site are.

I want to make sure your post is as discoverable as can be. But because the title of this thread is 'App Randomly Restarts,' your description above doesn't really fit well here. Please consider moving that part to its own post for its own attention.

If I'm understanding this correctly, your app relates:

  • Contacts <1:N> Projects
  • Contacts <1:N> Companies

And from a previous post you described the list as containing 100s of fields. Did you mean 100s of rows or 100s of fields (columns)? If it's 100s of fields, that would have a much greater impact in the long term than the number of rows.

You mentioned two of the fields are using lookups. Are they look ups against the connected data source or look ups against a collection? Can you share the formula you're using for the lookups and the filters on the galleries?

Re: App Randomly Restarts

@Mr-Dang-MSFT
Hi, just to clarify jargon.  I have an MS Access background.  All of the data in this app is stored in Sharepoint and entered in MS Access.  Please correct my jargon if there’s a standard that I am not aware of.

So I guess that a Powerapp Gallery only has rows and fields within rows, (An item in Sharepoint is a row.  This becomes very confusing in Powerapps, because an item there is something completely different.  Or does it mean row in a Gallery?).
The gallery has one Table source and the fields are typical data from one or many cells within a column in a table.

---

That being said. The source of my gallery in my Home Screen is a collection and the gallery has hundreds of Rows, each row has three fields.  My Home Screen Gallery contains no lookups and can be filtered by a “Text input” and/or a “Combobox”:
Items - SortByColumns(If(IsBlank(H_ComboBox.Selected.Result),Filter(Col_Contacts_Table,H_TextInput.Text in DisplayName_FileAs),Filter(Col_Contacts_Table,Contact_Company_Project=H_ComboBox.Selected.Result,H_TextInput.Text in DisplayName_FileAs)),"DisplayName_FileAs",Ascending)

---

My app is based on Contacts, Companies and Projects associated to one another.

The Source of my gallery in my Second Screen is also a collection, the gallery contains typically less than a dozen rows, each row has five fields (four labels and a star/rating).  One of the four labels contains a lookup:
Text - LookUp(Col_Related_Contacts_Table_Filter,Related_Contact_ID = ID,Related_Contact_Function)
The icon’s rating is also set via a look up:
Default - If(LookUp(Col_Related_Contacts_Table_Filter, Related_Contact_ID = ID).Primary_Contact,1,0)

This Gallery can also be filtered via a “Text input” and/or a “Combobox”:
Items - Sort(SortByColumns(If(IsBlank(S2_ComboBox.Selected.Result),Filter(Col_Contacts_Table_Filter,S2_TextInput.Text in DisplayName_FileAs),Filter(Col_Contacts_Table_Filter,Contact_Company_Project exactin S2_ComboBox.SelectedItems.Result)),"Contact_Company_Project",Ascending,"DisplayName_FileAs",Ascending),LookUp(Col_Related_Contacts_Table_Filter,Related_Contact_ID=ID).Primary_Contact,Descending)

Thanks again,
I think you merit a Microsoft Patience Award!
