Excel data table adding columns (in excel) seems to break the app

How does the excel data source work, since adding columns seems to break my app in that suddenly no data is returned.

It seems very flakey when editing the table in Excel on OneDrive.

Are there any rules that I should be following.  I'm not removing any existing rows just adding new ones.

Cheers

It is possible that you have a formula somewhere. Currently, PowerApps can only handle formulas in tables that are added as static data.

The other possibility is that your data has more than 500 records and PowerApps does not load them all unless they are delegated.

If you add a column, you need to Refresh the datasource.

  1. Make sure your excel file has uploaded to OneDrive.
  2. Add a button.
  3. Change its OnSelect property to: Refresh(name_of_your_datasource)

Or in the panel that shows your connected Data Sources, click the 3-dot button beside your datasource and click Refresh (not remove).

Re: Excel data table adding columns (in excel) seems to break the app

Many thanks for the response, tried that, but still no data is shown in the app!?

All I've done is add an extra field between my final column and the __PowerAppsId__ column.

Onedrive excel spreadsheet is definiatly updated and the filed is part of the table.

I've checked that the app recognises that the field exists, thisitem.fieldname

Refreshed data through button and refeshed connected data sources...

No joy!??

Is there any other way to debug the connection \ bindings?

Many thanks again.

OK, that makes sense, the field does contain an formula concatenating 2 fields!!

Where did you find details of this limitation?

Many thanks again for the solution.

The data limitation is described briefly here:

https://powerapps.microsoft.com/en-us/tutorials/function-filter-lookup/#delegation

As an alternative, you can use AddColumns to add your calculated column within PowerApps instead of Excel:

Hi

The link below will bring you to the explanation that:

- Excel can hold data & formula when doing manually

- PowerApps store data and patch calcuated data(with formula) into Excel (Table)

Hence, it implicitly tells us that Table for loading into PowerApps means = Purely Raw Data (until they release another notes indicating otherwise). Please read this part carefully and may help.

Re: Excel data table adding columns (in excel) seems to break the app

Hi all,

I had a similar issue which I dont think is due to formula. I only added a column after PowerAppsID but when the program is launched it has errors that seem to suggest that there is a formula.

I removed the extra column and no more errors only after waiting for a while.

Wondering anyone has that same experience? Also I am thinking is it because when the app is running, the excel file has to be closed?
