Strategies for many user-added photos

What are some strategies for users to add many photos to a PowerApp with a Sharepoint backend?

  • 60 form fields in PowerApp (built from Sharepoint custom list)
  • Each form field may require multiple photos

I don't want to add any more columns to the Sharepoint list but DO need a way to connect each photo to its respective column.

  • Form field/Sharepoint column: Floors
  • Image 1: Floor from east perspective
  • Image 2: Floor from north perspective
  • Image 3: Floor from south perspective
  • Etc.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: Strategies for many user-added photos

Hi @ericonline,

In SharePoint list, one Picture column can only add one URL of the image. I just tested and I cannot add the 2nd one. If this cannot even be achieved in SharePoint, then I'm afraid that you cannot use PowerApps to do this too.

Re: Strategies for many user-added photos

Thank you @v-monli-msft for looking into this. Do you know if PowerApps can add columns to a Sharepoint list for each image?

  • User1 clicks "Add Photo" and column "image1" is added to the Sharepoint list
  • User1 continues to add photos up to "image5"
  • The next user of the PowerApp, User2, clicks "Add Photo" and if "image1" to "image5" columns exist, photos are added to those columns
  • When User2 adds a 6th image, another column "image6" is added to the Sharepoint list

No, is my answer to your question. 🙂

Does SharePoint have to be the data source? What if you store the photos somewhere else, give them all a name that you can easily query, then just store in a column this is the name of the files that go with this record? Something like that. SharePoint is a terrible data source in the grand scheme of things. 🙂

Re: Strategies for many user-added photos

I hear ya! 🙂 I'm working through your Azure SQL Video and Paul Flaherty's SQL Image video to get something more "enterprisey" setup. Even though I create PowerApps for my employer, I've even gone as far as personally paying for O365 Business and Azure plans to get experience with Azure SQL. In a large enterprise env, there is a huge amount of effort and approval to "just spin up an Azure SQL instance". But thats another topic altogether!

Another consideration is, moving beyond Sharepoint as a data source also moves the bar on PowerApps being a "low code" solution (requires more expertise, increases complexity, loops in other departments, etc.). IMHO, developing killer apps as a one-two person team, without all the hooplah, is the number 1 benefit PowerApps has over every other app dev tool out there.

Thanks for the awesome videos and engaging conversation!
