When a record is edited a new one is created, the existing record isn't updated

Hello again,

What should I check to see why this is happening?

Trish

@v-siky-msft  Have you tried using both formulas successfully on the same app?

Screen 1 - Search for user

Screen 2 - Select user

Screen 3 - View, edit or add Client Workout

If I view a record and choose edit, I navigate to an EditForm, make changes and save using this formula:

Patch('Client Workout',If('New workout'.Mode= FormMode.New ,Defaults('Client Workout'),'Edit workout'.Mode= FormMode.Edit, First('Client Workout')),
'New workout'.Updates,{Client_x0020_Name:{'@odata.type':"#Microsoft.Azure.Connectors.SharePoint.SPListExpandedReference",Id:Gallery2.Selected.ID, Value:Gallery2.Selected.'Client Name'}});Navigate('Client Profile and List of Workouts', ScreenTransition.None)

If I create a new record using NewForm and save using the formula below then go back in and view the record without issue.  However, if I edit the record and save it, a new record is created.

SubmitForm('New workout');Patch('Client Workout',Last('Client Workout'),{Client_x0020_Name:{'@odata.type':"#Microsoft.Azure.Connectors.SharePoint.SPListExpandedReference",Id:Gallery2.Selected.ID, Value:Gallery2.Selected.'Client Name'}});ResetForm('New workout');Navigate('Client Profile and List of Workouts', ScreenTransition.None)

Screen shot 1 - Viewing newly created record

Screen shot 2 - Editing newly created record

Screen shot 3 - Went back in to view newly edited record

@trishmalloy  If you are using a Form that has been created after you have selected its data source, there's no need for all that code. You only need one line of code for both modes.

Ie

- when Form is in Edit mode, SubmitForm("New Workout")

- when Form is in New mode, SubmitForm("New Workout")

so the same code on the one button is all you need.

The SubmitForm function checks what mode the form is in first, then if in NEW mode it creates a record but if in EDIT mode updates/changes a record. Here's the doc link

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/maker/canvas-apps/functions/function-form

Why you are getting 2 records with your second code is because SubmitForm() creates 1 record, then Patch() creates another. The first code only has Patch() so only 1 record.

As I said above though, get rid of all the Patch code and just leave SubmitForm() on your button/s and it should work.

The new and edit screens have 2 forms on it, don't I need to use the patch function to include the Client's name which is the first form, the second is the actual client workout data.

@trishmalloy ah, I think I'm picking up what you are putting down. Not sure why you have 2 Forms but we can work with it.

Rather than submit the form with the client name set the Default property of the Client_x0020_Name field to the selected name and just submit/patch once. If that makes sense?

Hi @trishmalloy ,

Please abandon this code :

SubmitForm('New workout');Patch('Client Workout',Last('Client Workout'),{Client_x0020_Name:{'@odata.type':"#Microsoft.Azure.Connectors.SharePoint.SPListExpandedReference",Id:Gallery2.Selected.ID, Value:Gallery2.Selected.'Client Name'}});ResetForm('New workout');Navigate('Client Profile and List of Workouts', ScreenTransition.None)

You just need the following Patch code whenever you edit or create records, this code will check your form's mode and automatically judge to create or edit the record.

Note: In the following code, I use First('Client Workout')  to edit the first record, this is for the test. you should replace it by the form's item that you are editting(it may be Gallery.Selected, or lookup expression). If you feel confused with this, post back the Items property of Form, I can update the code for you.

Patch('Client Workout',If('New workout'.Mode= FormMode.New ,Defaults('Client Workout'),'Edit workout'.Mode= FormMode.Edit, First('Client Workout')),'New workout'.Updates,{Client_x0020_Name:{'@odata.type':"#Microsoft.Azure.Connectors.SharePoint.SPListExpandedReference",Id:Gallery2.Selected.ID, Value:Gallery2.Selected.'Client Name'}});Navigate('Client Profile and List of Workouts', ScreenTransition.None)

Best regards,

Sik

Hello @v-siky-msft ,

I added this code to both the New Form save icon and the Edit Form save icon.  Two records were created when I edited the new record.

Patch('Client Workout',If('New workout'.Mode= FormMode.New ,Defaults('Client Workout'),'Edit workout'.Mode= FormMode.Edit, First('Client Workout')),'New workout'.Updates,{Client_x0020_Name:{'@odata.type':"#Microsoft.Azure.Connectors.SharePoint.SPListExpandedReference",Id:Gallery2.Selected.ID, Value:Gallery2.Selected.'Client Name'}});Navigate('Client Profile and List of Workouts', ScreenTransition.None)

I'm not sure how to correctly change First('Client Workout') to a lookup expression or gallery.selected.  I would like some help with this, please.

Trish

The Items property of the form is Gallery3.Selected

@v-siky-msft Are you able to help me?  See my last post.

@Anonymous  Seems like a logical conclusion.  However, The New form is in NewForm mode and the Edit form is in EditForm mode.

@v-siky-msft @Anonymous @SkiDK - Are any of you able to continue working with me on this issue?
