CDS not listed

In the tutorial

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/maker/canvas-apps/data-platform-create-app-scratch

almost immediately one needs to select CDS in the data pane, but it's not listed. It says this environment has not entities. There are many connectors listed but it's not listed there either. Why? CDS is supposed to be included in powerapps, correct?

Re: CDS not listed

Hi @cavedale ,

Do you want to connect your app with CDS?

If so, firstly, you need to create entity in your CDS.

Then create fields and enter data in your entity.

You could see CDS as a kind of data source.

You need to inert data into it then you could use data in it in powerapps.

Here's a doc about how to create entity in CDS for your reference:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/maker/common-data-service/data-platform-create-entity

Then, in the same environment, create a canvas app.

(You could only connect your app with the entity in the same environment.)

In you app, choose the entity that you just created to connect with.

After you connect with your entity successfully, then you could select this entity as your data table's Items.

Re: CDS not listed

PowerApps does not offer new entity creation to me. And this AM for the first time after re-logging in I am shown this page

https://us.create.powerapps.com/studio/#

which says Common Data Service and has a premium icon on it. So possibly I don't have the ability to use CDS?

Re: CDS not listed

Hi @cavedale ,

Could you tell me what is your license?

Only premium powerapps license(per app plan/per user plan) could use CDS.

Here's a doc about license in powerapps:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/admin/pricing-billing-skus

If your license is enough, please check your permission: whether you have permission to use the CDS in this environment.

You need to contact this environment's admin or global admin to check this.

Re: CDS not listed

I could not find anything in powerapps that indicates the license, but I'm sure now that I don't have the license needed to experiment with data and powerapps. It is a very Microsoft touch that the very first getting started tutorial requires a license upgrade.

I didn't realize that powerapps was copying the salesforce model. It's expensive, and for what you pay, restrictive and underpowered.

Re: CDS not listed

Hi @cavedale ,

1)You could find your license here:

421.PNG

2)If you just use PowerApps to learn, I suggest you try powerapps community plan, which is free.

It includes most feathers that premium plan has, including CDS feather.

However, it is just used for learning, which means that you can not create environment, share app by using this license.

When you registered this plan, you will have a default environment and you could make tests in this environment. This environment has one CDS database.

But you can not create other environments by using this plan.

Here's a doc about this community plan for your reference:

https://powerapps.microsoft.com/en-us/communityplan/

Re: CDS not listed

Hi, you should have the ability to use and play with CDS. Go to https://admin.powerplatform.microsoft.com/environments then click "New" at the top to create a new CDS environment. Make sure you select "Create a database for this environment". Once you environment if created you would be able to select it in your app.

If ever you don't have access or license issue, can you easily provision a trial environment at https://trials.dynamics.com.  Select either "Sales" or "Customer Service". Hope this helps!
