Can I build a generic Gallery Component?

I don't even want to start to attempt this before asking for an opinion. But having been so used to C# generics and building reusable components and user controls and partial views and what not, can I even attempt to build a generic gallery control?

I just realized that most of my screens have galleries in it. Every gallery takes in the same ol' Items collection (different sets of data source and fields in each page of course)  and sorting and paging and scroll bars and what not.

Is it even an viable option to even think of building a generic gallery component and save loads and loads  of time? Just the fact that we have severe design time restrictions of the controls used within a gallery, it could perhaps be impossible to even think that way. But just curious.

Please let me know if anyone has even attempted to build such a generic gallery  component  which takes in say, a collection of sorts as its input and somehow we can configure controls within it BUT we just code the sorting/paging and all the the other sundry  gallery properties in a generic component way?

Thanks again.

@rprahalad To do a very professional generic gallery, you will have to go down the PCF route. That's a Pro Dev job. To do something not so complicated, you can use components within PA along with input & output properties. With the addition of Behaviour properties, more can be achieved with components. If you wish to share the component between Apps, the component has to be placed inside a Component Library.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your response,  @CNT . Yes, I understand that the components is the way to go. But where I am kind of stuck is, placement of controls. Some galleries may have labels and some may have dropdowns. That part is where my confusion stems from.

I think PCF is something that I can go about researching I guess.  It just is so time consuming and tedious to repeat the same gallery code over and over and over again.

Thanks though!

@rprahalad Adding or changing controls dynamically is not possible. I've put in this idea long ago (https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/Power-Apps-Ideas/Dynamically-add-a-new-control/idi-p/180520 ).

But if you to build a Gallery to just display information, you can just have one label in the gallery and Concat the column values (in the order you want) to form a string. But this may nor be worth it as the Data Table control already does this.

These are my thoughts!

Hi @rprahalad,

The native Power Apps gallery component can be used for many things: it can be used to show data as a table (which will basically use labels) and it can be used to include editing components (like text inputs, buttons, and so on).

If your question is about using a gallery to show tabular data and be able to provide a data source and then just specify the columns order, sorting and filter options and wrap all this into a component (a kind of advanced version of the actual Datatable component), the answer is NO: it doesn't exist at the moment. Yet, I think thousands of developpers (including myself of course) would love to have such a component. But to my knowledge no one has ever done it yet. And if anyone decided to make one, PCF would be the only way to do it.

😊

Thanks @R3dKap ! Its always great to hear what others think. Appreciate your response.

Thanks @CNT ! Yes, it makes absolute sense. Appreciate your response.

@rprahalad glad to help!
