Can't save filtered lookup column that allows for several choices

I have managed to create 2-level cascading dropdown columns for a sharepoint list when the secondary dropdown only takes one value. However, now I need a secondary cascading dropdown that allows for the selection of multiple values. I've tried using both lookup-columns and choice-columns to no avail. What I've tried is:

 

Main list "Main" containing single-text column "Drop1" and lookup column "Drop2" with "allow several selections" enabled.

 

Referencelist "Ref" containing single-text columns "Text1" and "Text2".

Example of "Ref":

Text1         Text2

Group A    Subgroup A1

Group A    Subgroup A2

Group B    Subgroup B1

Group B    Subgroup B2

 

So, first in "Main" i use a "Distinct(Ref;Text1)" on a combobox to get a searchable distinct list of Text1, and then use "ComboBox1.Selected" on a datacardvalue which in turn updates the variable with "DataCardValue1.Selected.Result".

This works fine and saves to "Drop1"-variable in "Main"-list.  

 

Then In "Drop2" I only want to see the values that correspond to my choice in "Drop1" e.g. if i select "Group A" I only want to see "Subgroup A1" and "Subgroup A2". 

 

I set the Datacardvalue "Items" for "Drop2" to "Filter(Ref; Text1 = DataCardValue1.Selected.Result)" and change the "Displayfields" and "Searchfields" to "Text2". Finally I set "Update" for "Drop2" to "DataCardValue2.SelectedItems.Text2"

 

No errors reported by powerapps, and when I run the form to add a new row all the correct selections of "Text2" appear in "Drop2". I'm also able to select several items in "Drop2" before saving. The problem is that the values I select in "Drop2" are not saved to "Main"-list. I must be missing something about how to save a group of values to a lookup or multiple choice column - I also tried using a "Split( "Hello, World"; "," )" in the items for datacardvalue2 and it's the same: I can see "Hello" and "World" as options and select both of them, but they fail to save to "Main" list.

 

I hope this was clear, please let me know otherwise!

Do you mean that you have trouble in saving value in drop down2?

If so, I suggest you set Text2 to multiple choice column.

The first 3 formulas are right, your problem is the last problem.

Please try this:

1)drop down1's Items:

Distinct(Ref;Text1)

this field's datacard Update:

DataCardValue1.Selected.Result

 2)drop down2's Items:

Filter(Ref; Text1 = DataCardValue1.Selected.Result)

Let me explain where's your problem:

1)text1 field is text type, so you need to use text value to update this field.

"DataCardValue1.Selected.Result" represents a text type.

2)text2 field is a choice column which allows multiple choice. So you need to use a table with a column named Value to update this field.

DataCardValue2.SelectedItems represents multiple records in Ref table.

ConDataCardValue2.SelectedItems.Text2 represents a table with nested table.

You need to use formula like this concat all the value in the nested table.

Concat(
        ForAll(ConDataCardValue2.SelectedItems,Concat(Text2,Value&",")
               ),//concat one by one record
        Value&",")//concat all records

It appears that the reason no data from Drop2 is being saved is because you are trying to add a VALUE instead of a RECORD to SharePoint. Also, is your SP column set to 'Allow Multiple Selections'?

1)text1 field is text type, so you need to use text value to update this field.

Thank you for an excellent and clear solution!

 

Interesting, so in order to save the choices to the dropdown we need to first send them to a comma-seperated string, and then loop through that string as results to the dropdown column. I can now successfully save the choices to the second dropdown, I'm sure the client will very much appreciate this feature!

Summer of Solutions | Week 4 Results | Winners will be posted on July 24th

We are excited to announce the Summer of Solutions Challenge!   This challenge is kicking off on Monday, June 17th and will run for (4) weeks.  The challenge is open to all Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate, Copilot Studio & Power Pages) community members. We invite you to participate in a quest to provide solutions in the Forums to as many questions as you can. Answers can be provided in all the communities.    Entry Period: This Challenge will consist of four weekly Entry Periods as follows (each an “Entry Period”)   - 12:00 a.m. PT on June 17, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on June 23, 2024 - 12:00 a.m. PT on June 24, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on June 30, 2024 - 12:00 a.m. PT on July 1, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on July 7, 2024 - 12:00 a.m. PT on July 8, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on July 14, 2024   Entries will be eligible for the Entry Period in which they are received and will not carryover to subsequent weekly entry periods.  You must enter into each weekly Entry Period separately.   How to Enter: We invite you to participate in a quest to provide "Accepted Solutions" to as many questions as you can.
