Can toggle "oncheck" code execute without manual intervention? (for while loop implementation)

Context: I'm attempting to implement a while loop.

I found two examples of this where-by a while loop was implemented by having the state of a toggle being set by a variable, and then upon being turned on, "oncheck" executing code:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQtRdvpF9F0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmeDv6b1Zhg

Seems like an annoying, but functional way forward. In both videos, the code executes as described. However, I could not replicate it. The toggle would not execute the "oncheck" code when its state was changed to "checked" via a variable.

Looking through the forums, I found the following which suggests this functionality is not available:

https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/Building-Power-Apps/How-to-trigger-a-Select-inside-a-gallery-fro...

https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/Building-Power-Apps/Modern-Fluent-Toggle-Control-not-running-any...

In particular, v-xiaochen-msft states: "Oncheck and Onuncheck will only be triggered when the user clicks the checkbox with the mouse."

So, I'm confused. Did something change? And if so, any suggestions on how to implement a "while loop"?

thanks!

-mike.

While loops typically indicate the app is being written in imperative way, instead of the declarative nature of Power Apps and Power Fx. I saw your earlier question so I assume it's related to your tree-view style problem. In this case, it's a data "problem" in a sense.

Obviously if your records all had a "root id" field or something, you could filter. Barring that, you could add it from a formula if your records had a "level" field, indicating at which level deep the record sits (you could then start at top level +1 and iteratively fill out a root ID field, which you can filter on).

If you have neither, I'm not sure how you can proceed. A while loop is going to be difficult to implement and amount to a hack. I realize that is what you're pursuing right now, but have you any option to have the data set include the extra columns already? This would also avoid any performance problems as your dataset grows (by not requiring power apps to do this calculation every time you retrieve the data).

Many thanks JorisG,

you are correct. This is in pursuit of being able to search through a tree structure. I've gone back and forth on which path is better: establish the tree-relationships at point of data entry, or on-the-fly when generating the gallery list. (thus the need for a while loop) I've prefer the later, as the former is challenging to mange when database entries need to be modified. (Say if a user discovers they selected the wrong originating sample when creating a new sample entry) Anyways, Powerapps limitations and my flawed code/data-structure aside, the team requirements stand and are legitimate. If it is discovered that there is an issue with sample X (as is often the case), it is desired to quickly visualize all the potential other samples that may be compromised, and find the root cause. Thus ideally, I'd like to present the gallery items in the following structure:

  • Sample 1
    • Sample 1.1
      • Sample 1.1.1
      • Sample 1.1.2
    • Sample 1.2
      • Sample 1.2.1
      • Sample 1.2.2
      • Sample 1.2.3

At this point, I'm inclined to establish the tree relationships at the point of sample generation, despite the challenges of maintenance.
