Collections

Hi,

I have a collection with two columns: Name and Number with multiple entries.

On a ButtonClick I want to display the Number of a specific Name in a Label (not in a Gallery).

I can do it directly in the Label with:

Concat(Filter(Collection, Name = "XY"),Number)

But I don't know how to do it over the OnSelect Option from a Button.
Can please anyone help me?
Thank You

@AlainL80

Can you expand a little more on what you mean by the OnSelect option of a button?  What are you expecting to do on the click of the button?

But I don't know how to do it over the OnSelect Option from a Button.

You should not try to do this directly in Power Apps - in other words, you should not try to manipulate the other Control property directly from the first Control.

Instead try this:

1) On your Label's Visible property, same one where you already have the Concat working, use either a Context Variable (UpdateContext) or a Variable (Set). In this case, let's suppose a Variable for simplicity (if you are sure it is scoped on same screen, you may want to consider Context Variable instead, but we shall use a global Variable for now). This Variable should be initialized to false from the OnVisible of the Screen that it will appear on.

OnVisible of Screen:

Set(_SomeVar,false)

and

Visible property of the Label:

_SomeVar

2) On your OnSelect of the button, use this formula from somewhere in there:

Set(_SomeVar,true)

After #2 happens, something will be displayed to the user, that was not displayed before, upon the click (i.e. OnSelect) of the button.

Check if something like above helps you @AlainL80

Hi thank you all for the fast reply.

It is my first App in PowerApps, and maybe i'm building my App the completly wrong way.

But I think I have to give mor Information about what I'm trying to do:

I try to build a simple App for our Office called Coffee_List.

So if you take a Coffee, in the App (on a Windows-Tablet) you push a Button with your Name.

Under this Button is a Label with a variable. On the Button-Click the variable is updated by +1.

The value displayed in the Label is then saved in a SP-List.

This works fine.

But if I restart the App, the Label is empty, an the user will overwrite the entry in the SP-List with the wrong value (1).

So I made a collection with the Name from the Button and the value displayed in the Label.

Then I save the Data (and load it on the Start of the App).

Now Ii want this value from the collection displayed in the Label (with the (local) Variable).

Here are the settings of my Button:

Remove(CoffeeAmount; First( Filter(CoffeeAmount; Name = "XY)));;
UpdateContext({XYCounter: XYCounter+1});;
Patch ( Coffee_List; LookUp( Coffee_List; Nickname = "XY" ); { Coffee: XYCounter} );;
Collect(CoffeeAmount; {Name: Button_XY.Text; Coffee: Label_XY.Text});;
SaveData(CoffeeAmount;"SavedCoffeTemp")

CoffeeAmount = Collection
XYCounter = variable in the label
Coffee_List = SP-List

I found out that theroeticly this works:

UpdateContext({Concat(Filter(CoffeeAmount; Name = "HEINO");Coffee})

But If I put this on a Button or on OnVisible from the Screen I get an Error because I use 2 times
UpdateContext({sameVariable...

I hope this describes my Problem better than my first Post.

Thank you again for your Help.

@AlainL80

Thank you for the explanation.   Your app is relatively straightforward, so don't overcomplicate!

Two more points of clarification:

1) I am not getting from your app formulas and information is how you are determining the Name of the person.  I believe you are perhaps having a whole bunch of buttons on the screen with the names in them.  Not sure how you are doing that, but a simple Gallery could be used to reduce the amount of work you are doing there.

2) I am not seeing from your description of the app - Why are you storing the collection locally with the SaveData?  Is this app not intended to be connected all the time?  Is this important for some reason?

So clarify the above a bit and I can get you more to your solution.

I like the app concept!  I'm going to build one now 🙂

Hi,

1) correct.

At the beginning I was not familiar with the Gallery. And now, instead of rebuilding the whole App, I try to find a solution this way.

2) The App works without the collections. Principaly the App is permanently connected.

This is just a Backup, if the Wifi-Connection goes down, or the Tablets Restarts or crashes.

In our office, the people pay their coffee at the end of the month. So if I loose the Data, I have a Problem or less money for our Christmasparty (not this year).

I added 2 Screenshots from my App.

Nice!  I told you I liked the idea and whipped up an app for here too.

I took a slightly different approach.

My app pulls its names from the ActiveDirectory and filters by the location.  That way names and pictures and emails can all be managed through normal Office 365 profiles.

So, essentially, I have a SharePoint list called CoffeeList.  It has two columns - the Title column (which will hold the email address of the person) and a CoffeeCount numeric columns (default of 0)

Then, I have a vertical Gallery with a wrap count of 4 and the following formula for the Items property:

With({_data:
    AddColumns(
        ForAll(
            Filter(Office365Users.SearchUserV2().value, OfficeLocation="Main"),
            {user: Mail, profile: ThisRecord}
        ),
        "Count", Coalesce(LookUp(CoffeeList, Title=user, CoffeeCount), 0)
    )},

    ForAll(Sequence(CountRows(_data)+1, 0),
        With({_thisRecord: Last(FirstN(_data, Value))},
            {Name: If(Value=0, "Guest", _thisRecord.profile.DisplayName),
             Count:  If(Value=0, 0, _thisRecord.Count),
             img: If(Value=0, ImgGuest, If(Office365Users.UserPhotoMetadata(_thisRecord.user).HasPhoto, Office365Users.UserPhotoV2(_thisRecord.user), imgNoPic)),
             usr: If(Value=0, {Mail:"guest"}, _thisRecord.profile)
            }
        )
    )
)

The above formula adds a Guest option to the list and then adds all the users based on a filter of the users by OfficeLocation (in my case "Main")

The OnSelect action for the Gallery is the following:

Patch(CoffeeList, Coalesce(LookUp(CoffeeList, Title=ThisItem.usr.Mail), Defaults(CoffeeList)),
   {Title: ThisItem.usr.Mail,
    CoffeeCount: ThisItem.Count+1
   }
);
UpdateContext({lclEnjoy:ThisItem.Name}) //more later

This will either update or create a record in the CoffeeList and add the user email and Coffee Count (incremented by one).

All the rest is dynamic.  No collections or variables used. Except one...I put a splash screen in once the person taps on their "mug".  This brings up an image for 3 seconds to tell them to enjoy their coffee.

This involved a timer control not visible with a duration of 3000 and a Start property of !IsBlank(lclEnjoy)

The OnTimerEnd action is UpdateContext({lclEnjoy:Blank()})

Then there is a screen blocker icon (rectangle) an animated GIF (I swiped on the web) and a Label to tell them to enjoy.  The Visible property of all three is set to !IsBlank(lclEnjoy)

The rest was just graphic stuff.

Here's how it looked in action (a little grainy as I had to cut the color compression on this a bit to get it in this post):

That's lot of work only for Coffee app - looks great!

@poweractivate  A lot of work?  Hmmm...it's two formulas and a SharePoint list!  Took about 20 minutes to complete!

I liked the idea that @AlainL80 had.  I've already modified it for a snack "purchase".  People can pick their name then the snack they want.  This will be great around the office to have people contribute to a Company party fund!  And the interface is simplistic.
