Combo-box (one pulled from LookUp Column) will not patch to SharePoint List

Hello! I have two combo-boxes ('Country' & 'Review Material') that will not patch to my SharePoint list, but all other fields in my form successfully do... Here is a screenshot of the form (there are a few other fields that aren't shown but these aren't important to the underlying issue):

jharville1_0-1610689915971.png

*The 'Country' combo-box only allows for a single selection, and the items are pulled from a "Choice" column in my SharePoint List

     -The name of the 'Country' field's combo-box is called "nationBox"

*The 'Review Material' combo-box allows for multiple selections, and the items within that combo-box are pulled from a Lookup Column

     -The name of the 'Review Material" field's combo-box is called "reviewComboBox"

This is the Patch() Statement that I currently have:

jharville1_2-1610690478317.png

***(side note: the 'Item' property of my EditForm is set to varRecord)

It is supposed to patch all of the fields into a list called 'cfa test list' (and also mark the FormStatus as "Submitted"), but it didn't patch any of the items selected from the "Country" and "Review Material" combo-boxes in my form to its perspective columns in my SharePoint List ...

I added Country: nationBox.Selected to the Patch() statement hoping it would add the item selected from my form's "Country" combo-box to the Country column in my SharePoint list, and even though it didn't throw any errors ... it didn't patch any info to the column and it still shows up blank.

Capture.PNG

(I've also tried Review Material: reviewComboBox.SelectedItems.Result to patch info to 'Review Material' but that didn't work either)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Capture.PNG

Does anybody know what lines of code will be able to patch the *one* item selected in my "Country" field (combo-box) of my form AND the *multiple* items selected in my "Review Material" field (combo-box) of my form to my 'cfa test list' (SharePoint List)?

I really appreciate the time you took for your response. I tried implementing the code in the Items property of my combo-box but ran into this error. I'm trying to see how I get around it right now with additional testing:

jharville1_0-1611674160074.png

The first part of your code (With statement) doesn't error out, but the second part (the ForAll) does.

@jharville1 ,

I have now constructed a model and the syntax below works as expected. I was close before with the free-typed one - just needs a full stop instead of a comma in the reference to Choices.

With(
   {
      wDD:
      Distinct(
         Choices('cfa test list'.reviewItem),
         Value
      )
   },
   ForAll(
      wDD,
      Collect(
         colDD,
         AddColumns(
            wDD,
            "Id",
            LookUp(
               'cfa review materials',
               reviewItem = Result
            ).ID
         )
      )
   )
)

Please have a read of this blog I did yesterday, which was partly inspired by this post.

@WarrenBelz

I inputted your code from the most recent response and still get the same error. I compared the most recent code you sent with the previous one, and it looks like the only change you made was within the With() statement ~ changing Choices('cfa test list',reviewItem) to Choices('cfa test list'.reviewItem). The only issue is the With() Statement isn't throwing any errors. Only the ForAll() Statement is throwing errors. Here they are:

jharville1_0-1611722416868.png

^^^ this is the error that is thrown when I hover over "reviewItem"

jharville1_1-1611722740886.png

^^^ this is the error that is thrown when I hover over "="

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm wondering what is the reason for why the syntax works on your end but is still erroring out on mine. Was the Items property of the reviewComboBox (combo-box of 'Review Materials') the only change you made?

I'm also glad that my post was able to help inspire your post from yesterday lol. It really is a good point to ensure foundations are stable before entering the main parts of a process. Using the Distinct on a Lookup was something I've never done before, and looking back I may have done things differently. Also, the Field Types section of your post is definitely a page I'm saving and will look back on in future PowerApps endeavors. I'm a little less than a year into entering the PowerApps field and have learned so much along the way. Setting up a strong foundation is definitely the route to pursue, and I will 100% keep this in mind for future projects and their perspective approaches. I sincerely appreciate the help you've given me so far and actually just sent you an invite on LinkedIn as well! I'll be sure to keep up with your blogs since you have taught me so much on these forums 🙂

@jharville1 ,

I will post below the code I have from my model - the List is TestFields and I have a field called LookupTest that is based on a list called Plant and displays a field called Vehicle

WarrenBelz_0-1611729512545.png

The code in Text is

With(
   {
      wAA:
      Distinct(
         Choices(TestFields.LookupTest),
         Value
      )
   },
   ForAll(
      wAA,
      Collect(
         colAA,
         AddColumns(
            wAA,
            "Id",
            LookUp(
               Plant,
               Vehicle = Result
            ).ID
         )
      )
   )
)

The resulting collection looks like this

WarrenBelz_1-1611729627281.png

Can you please see what you are doing differently.

@WarrenBelz

I compared our two coding sections and realized something was off on my end. Within the ForAll() statement, instead of reviewItem = Result, it should be Title = Result (since reviewItem is the name of the lookup column in my main list 'cfa test list' but Title is the name of the column in my child-list 'cfa review materials')

I made that change to the code you provided and no longer get an error when I hover over Title or the "=" sign, but still get this behavioral error.

jharville1_0-1611778144707.png

I wonder why I am getting this behavioral error but you aren't... Would it have anything to do with code that I have inputted in my OnChange property of the combo-box?

jharville1_2-1611778266192.png

If this isn't the case, I will look into what the "Behavior function in a non-behavior property" error entails.

@jharville1 ,

That should not affect it - you are simply (I use that word very loosely here) getting a list of values (the Distinct Choices) which seems to work fine and then going over to the other list they originally come from and looking up the matching record to retrieve the ID, which is then used to Patch back (you have not got to that bit yet) to your Multi-Choice Lookup column.

If you get rid of the Distinct and leave the combo box at the standard choices (and let Power Apps construct it), all of this goes away. Likewise, if the column was a multi-value Choice field (the Default choices could be anything you want as you are not using them), you would simply be writing back the Value you already have in the ForAll example I posted. What you are doing I generally call "code gymnastics" and at times you find yourself flat on your back staring at the ceiling . . .

@WarrenBelz

I actually think I'm onto something, but want to run it by you. I found this link that essentially stated that the reason I am having the error regarding "Behavior function in a non-behavior property" is because the code wasn't placed in an On_____ (OnSelect, OnVisible, OnChange, etc.) property:

https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/Building-Power-Apps/Setting-Variable-in-If-statement/td-p/341236

So I used my previous code for the Items property of my combo-box:

jharville1_0-1611809482268.png

...and moved your code into the OnChange property of the combo-box:

jharville1_1-1611809556962.png

...and to my surprise, there were no errors! All I need to do now is implement the Patch() you sent me into the OnSuccess of the EditForm, but it's error-ing out. Would you know what is wrong with my Patch() ? And would the Patch() statement be placed in the OnSuccess of the EditForm or the Submit button of the EditForm?

This is my original Patch() statement that has no errors:

jharville1_2-1611809879182.png

This is my new Patch() statement where I'm trying to patch items to my reviewItem column in SharePoint from the Distinct function applied onto my lookup. I used the rough-draft formatted code you sent earlier:

jharville1_3-1611810056868.png

Here is the explanation of the errors:

jharville1_4-1611810120807.png

We are getting so close to the solution, just need to get this Patch() function working and we should be good!

Thank you for your help Warren

@jharville1 ,

Always test code on a button when you are having errors - you can put it back where it belongs later, although there is not reason it should not work OnChange.

We are going to have to draw a line in the sand on this shortly as I am running out of ideas and energy on it.

@WarrenBelz

I completely understand. This forum post has been more extensive than anticipated, and I really do appreciate your time and patience with me throughout the process. I will be trying to find the problem to my Patch() statement in the meanwhile, and once that is complete the solution to my issue for this entire forum post should be complete as well. Again, thank you for everything Warren.

@WarrenBelz

If I may, can I ask one last question? I was successful in removing all errors from my most recent post, by replacing reviewComboBox.SelectedItem with colDD:

jharville1_3-1611864639486.png       --->            jharville1_4-1611864732745.png

And to my surprise, the patch works! It's just that colDD doesn't patch the items that are selected within that combo-box, it patches every single item that exists under the Title column in 'cfa review materials'. I do have another collection (colReviewItems), however, that holds items selected from the combo-box. The only issue is that colReviewItems only has a Result column, but no column for ID. colDD has both a column for ID and Result. How would I be able to populate colDD with only items that also exist in colReviewItems but also include a column for the ID so that those items are patched to my SharePoint list?

jharville1_6-1611865239782.png<--- this is the OnChange of my combo-box

As of now, I'm thinking there are two potential solutions, but not sure which is more feasible:

1) Have colDD only show items under Result and ID (instead of showing the entire list of items under the column from SharePoint as it currently is doing) if the match for the Result column also exists in colReviewItems.

2) Create a new collection that looks at what is in colReviewItems and compares it to the entire list of colDD, and once it finds a match in the Result column, it will save that match and pull its ID as well from colDD.

coLReviewItems.PNG    ....................             colDD.PNG

I appreciate your time and help, and promise this is my last question. It's just that I'm so close to getting the successful patch I want and this last post is the finishing step. Whether or not you're able to help with this last post, I sincerely want to thank you again for the help. It means a lot 🙂
