Copy collection SelectedItems to collection DefaultSelectedItems

Hi all,

I'm attempting to take a combobox's selected items, store them in a variable then set another combobox's DefaultSelectedItems on another page to those values. From my initial research, I need to serialise them into a string which I am doing like so (on a button press):

Set(
    variableName,
    Match( Concat( comboBox.SelectedItems, Result & "," ), "^(?<trim>.*),$" ).trim;
);

I'm then setting the DefaultSelectedItems like so:

[Split(variableName, ",")]

I assume I need to somehow convert it to a table/collection as the values appear as a single selected item "[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]"

Thanks, let me know if you need more info.

Sam

Hi @Anonymous ,

All components have unique references across the app, so pages won't stop you accessing them - but if your first combo is inside another component (like a gallery) you may need to dig a little deeper to get to it.

If it's inside a form, then it's difficult to get to, but you shouldn't require any fancy footwork to get it from a collection.

You are however doing some interesting things to the output using the Match function which looks like it's extracting a piece of a string.

Whatever is in DefaultSelectedItems: of the second combo must exist in the Items: property exactly.  Can you share a little more about what they are doing, like the actual values of combo1 and combo2 Items: property?

Kind regards,

RT

Hi @Anonymous ,

If you have to do it this way we can explore it a bit more, but can you not just set your second Combobox DefaultSelectedItems: to

comboBox.SelectedItems

?

Kind regards,

Hi @RusselThomas,

The second combobox is on a different screen so has no reference to the first sadly.

Hi @RusselThomas,

I wasn't aware of that way of references working! That's good to know (I really should get some proper training in this).

I'm afraid setting the DefaultSelectedItems to "[comboBox1.SelectedItems]" still results in the [Object object] in the combobox2, so cutting out the Concat, Match and Split hasn't helped.

The Match function was simply used as an attempt to remove the trailing "," character that is made when using Concat. combo1 and 2 have their items loaded from an excel table, but they are the same.

Thanks, Sam

hi @Anonymous ,

Any particular reason you're using "[ ]" parenthesis?

Try removing them and referencing the control directly - just comboBox1.SelectedItems without any parenthesis.

if that still doesn't work, what does the Items: property of combo1 and combo2 look like in table form?

And if you collect comboBox1.SelectedItems, what does that table look like?

Kind regards,

RT

Hey @RusselThomas,

Fixing the square brackets got it to work, thanks so much!

While I'm here, now that I know that you can reference the other elements, is there a way that I can set combox2's items to just pull from combobox1 to save me from having to load them twice? I've tried using setting the Items property to "combobox1.Items" but it doesn't seem to be valid.

Hi @Anonymous ,

You can't really reference the Items: property in another control as the primary points to a source, while the secondary points to the property of a control as it's source.  The primary source isn't transitive in that way - it's an input, not an output.

PowerApps also generally caches the source in the background, so if you've got 20 controls on a page all pointing to the same source, it won't necessarily hit the source 20 times - but if you're worried about data and performance you can collect the source once up front (like on your app start), then point all combos at the same collection - that guarantees you will only hit the source once.

Collecting works well for sources that don't necessarily change a lot - like reference lookups for dropdowns and combos - but if the source data gets changed while your're in the app session, you'll need to recollect it to see the updated info.

Kind regards,

RT
