Creating dependent drop down list

Hi all,

 

I am creating dependent drop down list in power apps. Is there alternate way to replace "nest if" function? That is limited and I cannot finish adding in. 

 

I am planning to store data into share point list by selecting data in the drop down lists.

Can you provide a little more detail on what you are doing?  Perhaps the formula that you mention has "nest if" in it and what you are trying to achieve.

For example,

In the first drop down list, there are options A, B, C, etc.. (around 70 options)

In the second drop down list, the formula is "If(data.Selected.Value="A", ["1", "2", "3"] , If(data.Selected.Value="B", ["4", "5", "6"] , If(data.Selected.Value="C", ["7", "8", "9"] , and so on.. )))

 

I found that I can only make it only 50 "If" but I have more than that. So, I am looking for an alternate way to replace it.

Is the information for your Items coming from a datasource, or are you just putting in the items manually?

In other words, you mentioned the Items for the first dropdown are A,B,C - does that mean that it is ["A", "B", "C"] or are you doing some filter or choices or something there?

Yes. ["A", "B", "C"] are choices in the first drop down list. I just put them manually as choices because I am not sure how to link the form to 2 different datasources. Currently the form is linked to the share point list to store data.

Well you can certainly use other datasources as the source for your dropdowns.

 

However, the challenge you have is that you seem to want specific value for each condition of the "A" "B" and "C".

 

IF you are hand-writing this all into your dropdown, then I would suggest the following on the Items property of your first dropdown:

Table(
    {Value: "A", Choices: [1, 2, 3]},
    {Value: "B", Choices: [4, 5, 6]},
    {Value: "C", Choices: [7, 8, 9]},
    ...and so on...
)

 

Then simply set the Items property on your second dropdown to: firstDropDownName.Selected.Choices

 

If you have more details on how you want to connect this to a real datasource, then feel free to share that as well.

What if there is a third drop down list and it depends on the first 2 drop down list data?

 

As you mentioned, if I can use other datasource for my drop down lists, it will be easier for me since I don't need to enter all the data manually.

 

Actually I want to select data from the first 2 drop down (student names are depend on the class id) and then display other data (Age and Gender) also as below. Then add in other data (marks of subject 1 and 2) and save the form and store in share point list.

 

Class ID (first drop down)

Student Name (second drop down)

Age (want to display)

Gender (want to display)

 

Marks: 

Subject 1 (to enter)

Subject 2 (to enter)

 

I am sorry if I confused you. I have only few knowledge in this and trying to make an app. 😥😓

Only confusing because your data scenario is unique to you in this case.  However what you are trying to do is all perfectly fine.

The real question is how does all of the data relate and where does it come from.  

This is one of the BEST features of PowerApps is that you can shape your data in so many ways to get exactly what you want.

 

The key in your case is table and table and more tables.

 

As an example.  If your first dropdown Items was set to:

    {ClassID: "A", 
     Students: Table({Student:"Dave", 
                      Marks: Table({Subject: "Math", Mark:4}, 
                                   {Subject: "Tech", Mark:3.5}
                                   {Subject: "Arts", Mark:3}
                             )
                      },

                      Marks: Table({Subject: "History", Mark:3.2}, 
                                   {Subject: "PowerApps", Mark:3.5}
                                   {Subject: "Music", Mark:3.8}

Then, second dropdown (Students) Items set to:  firstDropdownName.Selected.Students

Then, third dropdown (Subjects) Items set to: secondDropdownName.Selected.Marks

 

Then the above would cascade all the data.  Of course, you would want to get all of the data and shape it into that structure from your real datasources, but that is the concept.

 

You seemed to indicate though that some of the other "static" information about a student (i.e. Gender, Age, etc) you would want in dropdowns too!?  Not sure how that would really apply from a real-life scenario.  Certainly possible in PowerApps, but not seemingly practical.

So, assuming that same Items property, here is how Gender and Age would fit in:

So you would then have a label for each and reference the Student dropdown.

i.e.  studentDropdown.Selected.Age  and Gender on the other.

 

You can see that this starts to fit together with real data.

So for example, if you have a Class List, a Student List and a Marks list that have some connection to each other, then you can put the table structure above together using those lists.
