Delegation warning for 'Filter and Sum' function in PowerApps

Hi everyone,

I am having delegation warning for following function,

With(
        {
            wList: Filter(
                'List Name',
                col1.Value = dropdown1.Selected.Value,
                col2.Value <> dropdown2.Selected.Value
            )
        },
        Sum(
            wList,
            col3
        )
    )

Data Source : SharePoint List

Data Type of columns

col1 : LookUp column

col2 : LookUp column

col2: Number column

Highlighted part:   col2.Value <> dropdown2.Selected.Value

Delegation warning: The highlighted part of this formula might not work correctly with column "col2.Value" on large data sets.

Can anyone please help me to over come this issue?

Hi @Being_Learner ,

If it is not possible to make the function delegable, alternatives need to be explored to avoid issues. Pre-filtering may be an option to bring down the number of items to below the Data Row Limit and then apply the non-delegable filter to that:

With(
        {
            wList: Filter(
				Filter(
					'List Name',
					col1.Value = dropdown1.Selected.Value
				),
				col2.Value <> dropdown2.Selected.Value
            )
        },
        Sum(
            wList,
            col3
        )
    )

You can test if this works by bringing down the data row limit to 1 and then see if you still receive the expected results.

The Data Row Limit can be changed by clicking on File, Settings, General and then scroll down to the Data Row Limit:

Hi @Being_Learner ,

Assuming you are using SharePoint as a data source, the <> operator is not delegable. The only way around this, is to filter for those options that ARE allowed. For example, if you have a Choice set of ["Work in progress", "On hold", "Completed"] and you want to filter out the items that are completed, the first try usually looks like below:

Filter(DataSource, Status.Value <> "Completed")

Since the above is not delegable, the alternative is:

Filter(DataSource, Status.Value = "Work in progress" || Status.Value = "On hold")

To make this dynamic can be quite challenging, but it is not impossible.

Hello @BCBuizer ,

I have modified my query little bit.
Yes I am using SharePoint List as datasource.

Filter(DataSource, Status.Value = "Work in progress" || Status.Value = "On hold")

And I can't use this as the dropdown2 are quiet large amount.
I just filtered out the col3 data on the basis of dropdown1 selected value matches with col1 and dropdown2 selected value not matches with col2 from list

Hello @BCBuizer,

Sorry for replying late,
I have tried the alternate you have given (double filter function) but Its still gives delegation warning for the following line

"col2.Value" <> dropdown2.Selected.Value

Hi @Being_Learner ,

As explained, the code will not make the delegation warning go away, but it may negate the impact of it.

Did you perform the described test to see if it works?

Hi @Being_Learner ,

I realised my mistake in the proposed test: The first filter works without delegation, but the second filter will only return the first item from the pre-filtered data source.

If you change the Data Row Limit to s slightly higher number, like 100 you'll see that records are returned beyond the first 100 in the data source, but only the first 100 of the pre-filtered ones.

Since the Data Row Limit can be set up to a maximum of 2000, as long as you don't have more than 2000 items per possible value in col1, you should be fine.
