Dropdown list assign a different value to each gallery item (Part 2)

Hello,

I opened the first part of this post last week and had some precious help from @v-xida-msft  ...BUT... I closed it a bit fast and couldn't have additional help from him. I finally figured out that something is not working properly. I hope someone...or @v-xida-msft  would be able to help me again on this...

the original post was  https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/Building-Power-Apps/Dropdown-list-assign-a-different-value-to-ea...

In fact it almost works cause the problem i have is since i set the Item property of the gallery with  Choices(Impact.Timeframe) , It saves to the list but i can't show the values back into my gallery.

So back to my screenshots, when i select an item in the gallery at the bottom left (Activity) it should show the corresponding items with their timeframe. So I have a hidden field that allows me to filter the gallery at the right(Impact) depending on the selection in the Activity gallery. But I can't do that ...

so i readapted the formula in my "Impact" gallery this way

Filter(Choices(Impact.Timeframe),TextInput4.Text=Gallery5.Selected.Act)

where TextInput4 is the is the activity field that i use as a primary key. that doesn't show any error but it doesn't work and i can't get the values back in "Financial","Reputational","Legal".

So to be clear here the issue is, i can push the values of my fields to my list (following your answer) but i can't show the values of my list related to a selection in a first gallery.

Would you have any other idea for this ?

Thanks!!

Hello,

Sorry i come back a bit late but I managed to find a solution to this problem.

I simply used a workflow to generate new lines in my list. So every time I create a new Activity, a workflow starts and creates the 7 lines corresponding to my timeframes into my Impact list. ...Et Voila !

This does exactly what i needed

Thanks again for all your time and sorry for replying so late !

Hi @Kadd ,

Which column of your Impact List do you want to compare with the selected Act column value in your Activity Gallery (Gallery5)? Is it the IActTxt column?

Do you want to display the related records from your Impact List within the Gallery (which used to patch data back to your SP List) based on the selected Activity record in your Gallery5?

The Gallery solution ("Impact" Gallery) I provided above could only be used to collect user's multiple entries input and save back to your "Impact" List. If you want to display the related records within your "Impact" Gallery based on the selected Activity record in your Gallery5, I afraid that there is no way to achieve your needs.

Based on the Filter formula you provided, I think there is something wrong with it. As an fixed solution, you could consider add another screen (called "ImpactListScreen") in your app, and add another Gallery (called "ImpactListGallery") within this screen to display related records from "Impact" list for the selected Activity record.

Within the Activity Gallery (Gallery5), set the OnSelect property of the ">" icon to following:

Navigate(ImpactListScreen)

Within your ImpactListScreen, set the Items property of the ImpactListGallery to following:

Filter(
       Impact,
       IActTxt = Gallery5.Selected.Act
)

Note: I assume that you want to use the IActTxt column from your Impact list to compare with the selected Act column value in your Activity Gallery (Gallery5)

You could also consider add a "Back" icon in your ImpactListScreen, press it to navigate back to your "Impact/Activity" screen

Please take a try with above solution, check if the issue is solved.

 Hi @v-xida-msft ,

Thanks a lot for your answer.

Yes, Act is the column used in my Activity list and IActTxt is the corresponding column in Impact.

On my other screens, I manage to push values to my lists from a gallery but also show the content of my list into that same gallery using the ID as a key  the difference is i just have 1 list and 1 gallery. So i'm trying to use the same principle here with Activity and Impact using the Activity (Act) column as a key. My problem in this specific case is I need to the values from the column Timeframe (which is a choice) to be visible on each line (as you did in my other post).

Ok so from what you say, what i want is not possible but then... is there another way to do it ?

I mean I could have a simple Timeframe tet column and push the different values of my timeframe inside (hard coded values)...but then how can i hard code a different value to identify each line of a gallery and also these hard coded values have to be pushed to my impact list to identify my items. (I tried this but couldn't figure out how to do it....)

another thing i thought about was keeping the Timeframe choice column and use a condition and a counter to switch the values in the gallery. I used this method when i created this type of form in Infopath last year but i can't manage to make it work here.

If you ...or anyone else....could help again, that would be great !

Thanks a  lot !!

Hi @Kadd ,

Do you just want to use single one Gallery to add data back to your Impact List, and display records from your Impact List based on the selected Activity record?

Have you taken a try with the solution I provided above?

If you just want to use single one Gallery to add data back to your Impact List, and display records from your Impact List based on the selected Activity record, I afraid that there is no simple solution to achieve your needs.

As an alternative solution, you need to re-configure your Impact Gallery as below:

2.JPG

Add a ComboBox control within the Impact Gallery, set the Items property of the ComboBox to following:

Choices(Impact.Timeframe)

then the available timeframe options would be shown up within the ComboBox. Please set the SelectMultiple property of the ComboBox to false, so you could only choose one option from this ComboBox.

Add a "Save" icon and a "+" icon within this Impact Gallery, the "Save" icon is used to save current Gallery Item back to your SP list. The "+" icon is used to add a new entry in your Impact Gallery for collecting new record.

Set the OnSelect property of the ">" icon within your Activity Gallery to following:

Set(CurrentAct, Gallery5.Selected.Act)

Add a "Reset" button outside the Impact Gallery, set the OnSelect property of the "Reset" button to following (press it to show all available Impact records within this Impact Gallery😞

Set(CurrentAct, Blank())

Set the Items property of the Impact Gallery to following formula:

Filter(
       Impact,
       If(
          !IsBlank(CurrentAct),
          IActTxt = CurrentAct,
          true
       )
)

Set the DefaultSelectedItems property of the Timeframe ComboBox to following:

ThisItem.Timeframe

Set the OnSelect property of the "Save" icon to following:

Patch(
      Impact,
      LookUp(Impact, ID = ThisItem.ID),
      {
         Timeframe: ComboBox1.Selected,
         Field1: TextInput1.Text,
         Field2: TextInput2.Text,
         Field3: TextInput3.Text
      }
)

Set the OnSelect property of the "+" icon to following:

Set(CurrentAct, Blank());
Patch(
      Impact,
      Defaults(Impact),
      {
        Title: "New Entry"
      }
)

Please consider take a try with above solution, check if the issue is solved.

Hi @v-xida-msft ,

Thanks again for your answer.

Yes, I did what you described on your previous post on another screen and i know it works but in this specific case the complexity comes from that Timeframe field that i want to...kind of "auto-increment" ...

Using an additional screen is not a very user-friendly solution in this case since I'll have like 8 screens at the end, each of them is oriented on a specific part and they all work the same  in order to keep some kind of consistency :

* Top : Form that will populate the gallery, when user inputs new items

* Rest : Gallery where i can display the information related to a new item but also to a selected Depatrment-Process-Activity (so i go to my Departments list, open a specific department properties and that will load all my screens with prefilled information from the other lists) but in the same gallery i can also edit the information and push it back into the right list

so it works the same for all. the only difference here is the fact i don't have 1 gallery but 2. the second gallery is linked to the selection in the first one and i have this time frame field that should auto-increment..and this last point is the problem. So having an additional screen just to display the info will not be convenient, i would really like to try to avoid that.

Now about the new solution you offer, this is also something i do on one of my screens but again, the problem is, the timeframe doesn't "auto-increment" . Last year with infopath I did the same as you are showing where the user has to select the value in the dropdown but when consolidating our results we figured out that lots of people were not selecting the last 2 or 3 timeframes, this why i try to find a way to show the 6 values straight away and fill them into the list when saving.

This is why if there's a way, in a gallery, to have a kind of hard coded value specific for each line (each timeframe) and I can push this value into a column in my list  OR  do something like i did with infopath last year using a counter and the "preceding-sibling" formula that would make it. (i can't manage to reproduce this here).

So what you say is right and i did them on other screens, i know your ideas work but... the problem is to find a way to show the different values of the Timeframe...in the gallery but also have them back into the list.. 😞

hmm...voila !

Thanks !!
