Error Message with OnSelect of button to submit form

I'm getting an error message that I am not able to troubleshoot and need help.

SharePoint list name: LISTsignatures

Gallery name: signatures_gal

Form name: signatures_frm

Button name: btnUpdateSignatures <- submits data for form, signatures_frm

Upon clicking on the submit button, btnUpdateSignaturesthe error message I'm getting is,

"Network error when using Patch function: The specified column is read-only and can't be modified."

The thing is, I'm not using the Patch function at all on this button, btnUpdateSignatures... it's supposed to only submit the form, signatures_frm, to update information about signatures I am tracking.

The gallery signatures_gal feeds data to the form signatures_frm depending on the record selected, and then clicking on the submit button btnUpdateSignatures  is supposed to update the data for that record in the Sharepoint list, LISTsignatures.

For troubleshooting, I tried creating a another form, Form1, on the same screen from the Sharepoint list, using just one field. I didn't link it to the gallery just yet... and then created a fresh new button, Button1, to see if it would submit anything to the Sharepoint list LISTsignatures... I had success! The submit button DID submit data, it just created/added a new record. At least that confirms I do not have a network error. Then I tried linking it to the gallery signatures_gal based on the record selected, and again I got the error message above (under "Item" for Form1 I have "signatures_gal.Selected")

Anyone have any idea on how best to troubleshoot this? 😕

Thank you in advance,

Hi @kristinegriba ,

The error message you're seeing, "Network error when using Patch function: The specified column is read-only and can't be modified," is puzzling since you mention that the Patch function isn't used in your btnUpdateSignatures button's OnSelect property. Here are a few steps to troubleshoot this:

  1. Check for Hidden Code: Ensure there’s no hidden code within the button’s OnSelect property and that it is set to SubmitForm(signatures_frm).
  2. Inspect the Form: Verify that signatures_frm is properly configured with signatures_gal.Selected as its item source, and no other code is running on the form's submission that might involve a Patch function.
  3. SharePoint Column Settings: Review the columns in your LISTsignatures to confirm none are set to read-only status that the form might be trying to update.
  4. Permissions: Make sure your PowerApps and SharePoint permissions are correctly set to allow edits to the list items.
  5. App Behavior: Sometimes, PowerApps can show misleading error messages. Check for any other components that may have Patch function calls, such as other buttons or formulas that might trigger when the form is submitted.

@M_Ali_SZ365 Thank you for your feedback for troubleshooting. It IS odd... something has changed as it WAS working earlier this week 😞 So whatever has changed will be difficult to find. Sometimes I find my fingers trip over the keys and that 'does stuff' unintentionally LOL 😞

Anyway, everything you have listed has been going through my mind, so that's a good sign that you have confirmed for me that I'm on the right track. It's just gonna be painful to figure out and I was hoping for a shortcut 😂 I have a feeling it lies in my Sharepoint list itself, of which I am the owner/creator. I don't even know how to set a column to read-only, but that doesn't mean I didn't do that by accident somewhere along the way.

Thanks again for your guidance.

Hi Kristine,

It seems like an accidental change might be the culprit. Here's a quick checklist:

  1. Use PowerApps' version history to roll back to a working version.
  2. Check SharePoint list columns for any unintentional changes to settings.
  3. Re-examine all PowerApps formulas for any inadvertent edits.
  4. If stuck, post details on the PowerApps community forum for more ideas.

You're on the right track; a bit more digging should uncover the change. Keep going!

Muhammad Ali

@M_Ali_SZ365 Thanks for the encouragement, sir! Here's hoping I solve it and won't need to comeback to the forum on the matter LOL 🙂
