FIlter by Date (delegable)?

hey there

I figured dealing with dates comes with a lot of obstacles. Especially when comparing two dates with each other as dates might be saved as 2020/01/17 01:00 or similar. When you know what date has been saved, you can get workarounds when comparing them, like Text(<date>, "yyyy/mm/dd"), or Date(Year(<date>),Month(<date>),Day(<date>).

The only problem is that when you modify a date value, it's not delegable anymore. I never cared to ask myself on how to handle dates differently so it IS still delegable, but came across a situation recently where I might run into a delegation issue soon. So I thought the experts might have some good advice on how to deal with it? Especially when working with CDS, even if you choose a column type of "date only", it is still saving a time (12:00 AM).

Thanks for your advice and greetings,

Hi @mrQ

@WarrenBelz  has a section in his blog post about delegation that deals with dates.  See if you can use the information. https://warrenbelz.blogspot.com/2020/08/power-apps-delegation-is-word-not.html   To save you some time I'll repost the paragraph here and hope Warren doesn't mind.

Date Fields
These are a bit more complex and if you have absolutely no other work-arounds as mentioned above, one solution is to have a “Shadow” numeric field in the “yymmdd” format in your list. The value of this as related to a DatePicker control would be

Value(Text(DatePickerName.SelectedDate,”yymmdd”))
August 31, 2020 would result in the number 200831.
You would need to update this on the OnChange of the DatePicker and covert any date you are comparing it with, an example for the current day

UpdateContext({varToday: Value(Text(Today(),”yymmdd”))

So then a Filter

Filter(
   MyList,
   MyShadowDate >= varToday
)
would be a fully delegable query and able to be used on any data set size.

Hi @Drrickryp

Thanks for the link. Interesting read.

I'm using CDS - I would have expected a more elegant solution. Am I assuming correctly that, when using CDS only with Power Apps (and users won't need to edit data in CDS), it is therefore better to use Text instead of date fields - since its delegable? The formatting to those fields can easily be done in Power Apps...

Greetings,
