I have created a PowerApp on a Power BI report.
My intention for using this app is that the user will select a row in a table on the Power BI report, which will provide the context for the app to edit based on the key column provided.
Select stock code on report -> app uses the selected stock code as the current context -> user enters comment and clicks save -> the comment along with stock code (from report) is written to database
To clarify, when I say "selected" or "filtered", I am referring to when you click on a row in a table or other visual in Power BI, which highlights or filters other visuals.
This works fine for the first few rows of my table (as ordered by stock code), I am able to select a row, and its stock code is the only stock code sent to the app, and the app works as expected.
The issue comes when I select stock codes further down the list (for example, starting with "5" instead of "1").
For these instances, the only thing that works is if I use a stock code slicer to send only one stock code to the power app.
I am not happy with this solution as there are extra steps involved for the user: instead of working through a list in a natural way by clicking, entering a comment and clicking on the next one, the user will have to do the following:
1. Right click and copy stock code
2. Paste stock code into stock code slicer and click
3. Enter comment in power app
4. Clear slicer
5. Navigate the table to reach the same position they were previously
Are there limits to how powerapps takes data from power bi that I am not aware of?
I do understand that an app can only take a few thousand records - that makes sense - but how is it hitting limits if I am already filtering the data I provide?
Or should I rebuild the app to not even take advantage of the power bi integration, instead filtering directly? Which seems to defeat the purpose of this integration feature.
Two more things I have tried without success:
1. Rebuilt app in Power BI service (not in desktop)
2. Changed powerapps data field in PowerBI to an aggregation: "First StockCode" (instead of "Don't summarize")
I seem to have partially resolved it, or at least figured out why it is happening.
I've tested creating a new report and app from scratch to test the limits, and it had no issues with any of the 20000 rows in my sample - any that I selected were correctly filtered through to the power app and displayed.
What I did was to remove the "Comments" column from the table visual, as soon as I did so I was able to select any of the records in the table visual and they would correctly appear on the power app.
I think this has to do with the mixed data mode: all other columns in the table are on an Import data source, while the "Comments" column is on a direct query data source (which is necessary for the comments to reflect immediately on the report).
I've made a new discovery while rebuilding the report and encountering the same issue.
It appears to be due to SORTING.
In the table visual I am using, I have the following columns (among others):
StockCode
ExcessValue
StockCode is the field attached to the power app visual.
ExcessValue is the field by which I sort the table (priority values at the top).
With the table in this form, all of the stock codes at the top just happen to be outside of the range of the first 1000 stock codes (as ordered by StockCode), and selecting any of these does not cross-filter correctly to the powerapp.
When I change to sort by StockCode in the table and scroll through all 3000 rows, I can select any of them (even the ones I had issues with previously) and they will show on the PowerApp.
Similarly, back to sorting by ExcessValue, as long as I scroll down the table visual far enough (thus "loading" more rows), I am able to select any of the rows and have them appear correctly on the app.
This seems to be related to how PowerBI table visuals will only fetch 1000 rows at a time.
I have "fixed" the issue by putting a filter on the table visual to show only the top 1000 StockCodes, ordered by the ExcessValue column.
