Formula NOT calculating correctly

The formula I have in my control is simply NOT Calculating correctly:

When I highlight the Control Value used in the calculation - the formula bar thinks that the answer is ""

However, if I actually look at that control (DataCardValue14) - the Default Property actually evaluates to "£"

The control in question is part of a form, and at the point of interrogating, the form does NOT have an "Item" selected - so it should be a blank form.

The control is hidden, and therefore not edited by the user at all, So the ".Text" property should always be the "Default" property, and so the "DataCardValue14.Text" value should be correctly evaluated as "£" in the first calculation.

Anyone know why the formula is not being calculated correctly?

Does it have something to do with the fact that the form is "empty" (i.e. not actually looking at a record)

Any suggestions of a workaround to this bug?

James.
