Gray screens while editing app

Hey all!

I was recently editing an app and all of a sudden, all app screens are all gray. I have already verified the "Fill" and visibility parameters of all these items has not been changed somehow.

I can close the web browser (Edge and Chrome both) and reload the app to edit it, the main screen that opens will initially display all of the contents correctly (gallery, text boxes, buttons etc.), but as soon as a click to edit a different screen, it does not display any contents. I can click on items from the menu on the left and it will "highlight" the item on the screen with a box around it like usual, but the item itself does not display.

If I repeat these steps to load the first page again and then hit the "play" icon, it properly shows all the items as it should be, but as soon as I close the app preview, and then click to another screen, the issue is present again.

The last thing I was editing before the issue occurred was adding a Patch function to OnSucess of a Form as well as setting a form's DataCard's visibility to false. (again I have already verified the visibility parameters of these items)

I have also attempted to rollback to a previous version that was working without issue, but the issue still occurs. I have also created a new app just to see if it would do the same thing, but did not encounter the same issue.

Last bit of info for this is that even though all screens show only a gray background while editing, the app appears fine when launching the published version. I haven't the slightest clue how to continue troubleshooting this issue. I have read through several posts but done of them seem reflect the same issues I am experiencing or were left unanswered.

Any insight on what may be causing this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Matt

Just a quick update.. I wasn't able to determine what had initially caused the issue reported above, so I started creating a new app and was using the main app as a template to copy from.. While copying the contents from one of the main screens I noticed the main app was no longer having the gray screen issue...

This makes me thing it was some type of memory issue with the app that had gotten cleared once I started copying content/functions over..? I have no idea why it is working again, but it is. I am just fearful that this issue will arise again in the future.

I too have been having this issue on and off for a few months. Here is a post that I previously raised on the subject:

https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/Building-Power-Apps/All-grey-screens-in-Studio-mode-and-no-objec...

Another developer has just started working on our app and he comes across this issue multiple times a day. When this happens, he has to close and re-load the app in the editor - due to the size of our app, this takes about 4 minutes each time.

As our app is large, I am also under the opinion that this is memory related. Is there anything we can do to prevent this (apart from making our apps smaller)?

Trying to up this again because I'm having the same issue, and I don't think a resolution has been posted yet.

Appreciate any help from the support team.

Hi @Anonymous,

I found that my issue was not memory related. I had some instances of a component where one of the input properties was of Record type but the supplied record did not match the default schema - A field was missing from the record.

I am not sure why PowerApps didn't flag the schema issue. All screens would go grey as soon as I selected the screen containing the problematic component instances.

Do you happen to have any components with Record inputs?

@markfleet my problem was actually a bug in the latest release of the app - link below has more details:
