How can I add nested gallery's values to an Excel table?

I have a child gallery (horizontal gallery) inside a parent gallery (vertical gallery).
I want to add the information entered in the parent gallery to Excel table A and the information entered in the child gallery to table B.

1.

I set a button outside the gallery and wrote the following function in the property, but when I press the button, the record is added to table A, but not to table B.
I'm not getting any error messages, how can I fix this?

2.

I want to use the GUID issued by the parent gallery in the child gallery. However, the ForAll function of the child gallery cannot use the Set function or the UpdateContext function. How can I fix this?

now I'm writing code like this:

UpdateContext({localAGUID: Text(GUID())});

ForAll(
ParentGallery.AllItems,If
(
!IsBlank(TextInput),Patch(ExcelTableA,Defaults(ExcelTableA),{
labelA: localAGUID,labelB: TextInput.Text,

});

ForAll(
ChildGallery.AllItems,Patch(ExcelTableB,Defaults(ExcelTableB),{
labelC: Text(GUID(
)),labelD: localAGUID,labelE

: Dropdown.Selected.Value

}
)
)
)
);

It's fine, let me give you another example.

Here I have two galleries:

WiZey_0-1681889211803.png

GalleryA displays all items from colA.

GalleryB displays items from colB related to the item in colA.

GalleryC displays all items from colB.

In GalleryA, I have a button to create a new related item in colB with this formula:

Collect(colB;{ID_B:GUID();ID_A:ThisItem.Value;Value:"1"})

"GUID()" creates a unique ID for colB, while the column "A" stores the ID from colA. "Value" is simply here for show.

In GalleryB, the dropdown updates the items in colB with this formula:

Patch(colB;{ID_B:ThisItem.ID_B};{Value:Self.Selected.Value})

Notice that the second parameter of "Patch()" is a record with only an "ID" column. This helps the function recognize with record to update with the new values provided in the third parameter.

To better explain how colA and colB are related, GalleryC shows everything about colB. You can see that:

  • "ID_B" is a unique ID
  • "ID_A" refers to the item in colA
  • "Value" stores the value from the dropdown

Physically speaking, colA and colB are not connected to each other, they're simply two tables with ID we can make correspond.

That's why we can easily update the datasource using those two collections like this:

Patch('Table A', colA.ID, colA);
Patch('Table B', colB.ID, colB);

As I explained earlier, the second parameter of "Patch()" helps recognize which record to update. If the record does not exist, it will create a new one.

Was my explanation clearer this item? Don't hesitate if you have some doubts or more questions.

Hello @ken0245_ ,

How do you store your items in your nested gallery? Is it a property from the item in the main gallery, or is it a secondary collection in your app?

Basically, instead of working on the nested gallery (which is not optimal as it's quite tricky to tell Power Apps which control of which item to work with), you can do all the work with the item's property/secondary collection where the records for table B are stored.

Thank you @WiZey .

I found the following article.

解決済み: 日時: PowerApps ネストされたギャラリー - パワープラットフォームコミュニティ (microsoft.com)

As you mentioned, it seems difficult to work with nested galleries.

However, I don't quite understand the following part:

 >you can do all the work with the item's property/secondary collection where the records for table B are stored.

Do I need to write something in the OnSelect property of the button?

No it's really not difficult to work with nested gallery. As I said, you need to keep in mind two things :

- A gallery must be populated with a table.

- A table can contain a table

That's why I asked how you're populating your nested gallery. Is it from a collection in your app?

Thank you.

Here is an image of the actual gallery.

The red frame is the parent gallery (vertical gallery), and the green frame is the nested child gallery (horizontal gallery).

Users input data into the parent gallery using text input and dropdowns, and into the child gallery using dropdowns.

After inputting, I want to press the button on the bottom right to enter the following results into the Excel table:

(If only the first row was filled in)

ExcelTableA

1234(UniqueID),Test,Test2,Test3,Test4,Test5

ExcelTableB

5678(UniqueID),1234,UserA,RoleA

5679(UniqueID),1234,UserB,RoleB

5680(UniqueID),1234,UserC,RoleC

Does this answer your question?

One way to achieve it is to create two collections in your apps. One collection to store all records related to Table A, and a second collection to store all records related to Table B.

Both collections have to be initialized with a "ClearCollect()" at either the start of the app or when the screen is visible.

ClearCollect(colA, 'Table A');
ClearCollect(colB, 'Table B');

With this, you can now work with an image of your tables without messing with the datasource until you press the button.

Let's keep in mind that to update "colA", as it is the main collection, you only need simple "Patch()" functions, assuming you're writing these function inside the main gallery:

Create record: Patch(colA, Defaults('Table A'), {ID:GUID(), ...})
Update record: Patch(colA, ThisItem, {...})
Delete record: Remove(colA, ThisItem)

Now to update "colB", you must maintain a strict relation between both collections' records.

First, to display the records in the nested gallery you can use "Filter()" like this:

Filter(
  colB,
  'colA ID' = ThisItem.ID //'colA ID' is the column in 'Table B' where the related key is stored
)

Then, you can write functions like this to update "colB":

Update record: Patch(colB, {'ID': ThisItem.ID}, {...})
Delete record: Remove(colB, ThisItem)

I'm not sure how you want to create new records in "Table B", so I'll suggest either adding a button in the main gallery or creating a set amount of records from the start:

//When using a button from the main gallery
Button.OnSelect: Patch(colB, Defaults('Table B'), {'colA ID': ThisItem.ID, ...})
...
//When creating the records in Table B at the same time as Table A
With({_recordA:Patch(colA, Defaults('Table A'), {ID: GUID()}).ID},
  Patch(colB,
    ForAll(Sequence(5), Defaults('Table B')),
    {
      'colA ID': _recordA.ID,
      ID: GUID()
    }
  )
)

That's about how you handle multiple tables which are related to each others. Their integrity will not be broken and the method to update the datasource can now be resumed to two simple function:

Patch('Table A', ForAll(colA, {ID: ID}), colA);
Patch('Table B', ForAll(colB, {ID: ID}), colB);

Those two "Patch()" above work quite simply. You give it a table of ID to update and an equivalent table of records with the updates. Each ID non-existant in the datasource will be created instead.

Don't hesitate if you have more questions or remark if something in my example doesn't work properly.

Thank you@WiZey .

>Now to update "colB", you must maintain a strict relation between both collections' records.

>First, to display the records in the nested gallery you can use "Filter()" like this: I'm not sure about this part, but at this point, there are no records in TableB.

Let me restate what I want to do:

  1. Users enter text in the parent gallery and the nested child gallery. The parent gallery allows for multiple line input, and each child gallery on each line also allows for multiple line input.
  2. When the registration button outside the gallery is pressed, the values entered in the parent gallery are first added to colA. This might be the part of the code you provided.   >Create record: Patch(colA, Defaults('Table A'), {ID:GUID(), ...})
  3. Next, the values of the child gallery associated with each line of the parent gallery are added to colB. At this point, to later understand that the child gallery values are associated with the parent gallery values, the ID of colA is also stored in colB.
  4. The second line of the parent gallery is added to colA, and the associated child gallery is added to colB.
  5. The same goes for the third line and beyond. After execution, it looks like the following I posted last time. There is one record of the parent gallery, and the 3 lines of data in TableB are associated with the data in TableA by "1234".

ExcelTableA(colA)

1234(UniqueID),Test,Test2,Test3,Test4,Test5

ExcelTableB(colB)

5678(UniqueID),1234,UserA,RoleA

5679(UniqueID),1234,UserB,RoleB

5680(UniqueID),1234,UserC,RoleC

By the way, I confirmed that I could achieve what I wanted by placing the registration button in the parent gallery and pressing the registration button for each line.

However, this is not practical from an operational point of view, so I want to achieve this with a single button click.

I apologize if I did not understand your answer correctly.

Collect(colB;{ID_B:GUID();ID_A:ThisItem.Value;Value:"1"})

Patch('Table A', colA.ID, colA);
Patch('Table B', colB.ID, colB);

As I explained earlier, the second parameter of "Patch()" helps recognize which record to update. If the record does not exist, it will create a new one.

Was my explanation clearer this item? Don't hesitate if you have some doubts or more questions.

Thank you@WiZey . And sorry for my late reply.

In conclusion, it went well.
Since it was not possible to update the child gallery with a button placed outside the gallery, I implemented it in the following way.

1. Create an empty collection (colB) to store the data entered into the child gallery
2. Implement the following code in the OnChange property of the input box of the child gallery so that colB is updated each time it changes.

If(
    IsBlank(LookUp(colB, ID = ID.Text)),
    Collect(
        colB,
        {
            ID: ID.Text,
            ・・・
        }
    ),
    Patch(
        colB,
        LookUp(colB, ID = ID.Text),
        {
            ID: ID.Text,
            ・・・
        }
    )
)

3. I installed a registration button outside the gallery and implemented the following three processes with the Onselect property.
  3-1. Register input data of parent gallery in colA
  3-2. Add colA to ExcelTableA
  3-3. Add colB to ExcelTableB

I think your advice would be the following:
>In GalleryB, the dropdown updates the items in colB with this formula:
>Patch(colB;{ID_B:ThisItem.ID_B};{Value:Self.Selected.Value})

Thanks for your repeated advice.
If you have any further questions, please let me know.
