How to join multiple CDS entities in one view

Hi Experts,

I have one requirement to create a report with joining multiple CDS entities and add group by columns to sum the amount. This report will show three entities data, but seems the entity reference field cannot be added to the group by columns, this way I could not use the Lookup function to find this referenced object.Field.

The relationship between entities,

CostAccountingMeasurement entity

     -> CostObject entity

            -> CostObjectLocation entity (Site, Warehouse fields)

Refer to the below screenshot,

Ivy_Liu_0-1603800414225.png

AddColumns(
GroupBy(
'Cost Accounting Measurements',
"cas_environmentid",
"cas_subledgeraccount",
"cas_resourcetype",
"cas_resource",
"cas_measuretype",

"cas_costobject_costobject" ??
"all_data"
),
"sum_magnitude",
Sum(
all_data,
cas_magnitude
))

The Lookup column as expected

LookUp('Cost Objects','Cost Object'= ThisItem.costobject.'Cost Object', location).Site

Looking forward to your reply:)

Hi @Ivy_Liu ,

Yes, the LookUp formula can work perfectly on a Label in Gallery to display the grand-child entity field.

If you want to add that field value to the table to compose a view, please try with this code to join Site field to 'Cost Accounting Measurements' Table.

ClearCollect(colName,
AddColumns('Cost Accounting Measurements',"NewSite",
LookUp('Cost Objects','Cost Object'= 'Cost Accounting Measurements'[@costobject].'Cost Object', location).Site))

Then apply colName to GroupBy() formula, like this:

AddColumns(
GroupBy(
'colName',
"cas_environmentid",
"cas_subledgeraccount",
"cas_resourcetype",
"cas_resource",
"cas_measuretype",

"NewSite" ??
"all_data"
),
"sum_magnitude",
Sum(
all_data,
cas_magnitude
))

Hope this helps.

Sik

Hi Siky,

I got your idea., but when I tried to create the two collections as below, but when I used the collection colName for table control, there is no site data (null) to show. As you know the lookup works well in the single table column.

Collect(measurement, Filter('Cost Accounting Measurements', 'Cost Accounting Events (Views)'.'Active Cost Accounting Events'))

Collect(colName, AddColumns(measurement, "Site", LookUp('Cost Objects','Cost Object'= measurement[@costobject].'Cost Object', location).Site))

Thanks,

Ivy

Hi @Ivy_Liu ,

Yes, I also have the same issue like you. so I make some hack trick to make it work.

When I just use the following code, the "UserFullname" show blank in collection and Gallery, but if I put a Label in Gallery to trigger the LookUp formula to also display the grand-child entity field, then everything can work properly.

It seems that the LookUp formula in Gallery Label fires the hierarchical relationship, then make it work.

Always refresh the Entity Data source is another trick. Hope these can help you.

Hi @Ivy_Liu,

You can also built a view directly in CDS and optionally use FetchXml to define a more complex query for the CDS view. You can then reference that view in your app which might simplify your expressions and overall solution. If you end up wanting to use FetchXml, look at the View Designer from XrmToolbox, it will help design the fetchxml and the view: https://www.xrmtoolbox.com/plugins/Cinteros.XrmToolBox.ViewDesigner/

Hope this helps!

Hi Eric,

That's good to know the view designer, but seems there are some limitations in power apps..

I tried to use the view designer to create fetch xml that matches my requirement, one view joining three entities.

<fetch version="1.0" output-format="xml-platform" mapping="logical" distinct="false" count="50" >
<entity name="cas_costaccountingmeasurement" >
<attribute name="cas_environmentid" />
<attribute name="cas_subledgeraccount" />
<attribute name="cas_magnitude" />
<attribute name="cas_resource" />
<order attribute="cas_environmentid" descending="false" />
<order attribute="cas_subledgeraccount" descending="false" />
<order attribute="cas_resource" descending="false" />
<attribute name="cas_costaccountingmeasurementid" />
<filter type="and" >
<condition attribute="cas_measuretype" operator="in" >
<value>13</value>
<value>14</value>
</condition>
<condition attribute="cas_subledgeraccount" operator="in" >
<value>Inventory</value>
<value>InTransit</value>
</condition>
</filter>
<link-entity name="cas_costobject" from="cas_costobjectid" to="cas_costobject_costobject" link-type="outer" alias="costobject" >
<attribute name="cas_activitykey" />
<attribute name="cas_activityvalue" />
<attribute name="cas_dualactivitykey" />
<attribute name="cas_dualactivityvalue" />
<attribute name="cas_dualorganization" />
<attribute name="cas_organization" />
<link-entity name="cas_costobjectresource" from="cas_costobjectresourceid" to="cas_costobjectresource_resource" link-type="outer" alias="resource" >
<attribute name="cas_product" />
<order attribute="cas_product" />
</link-entity>
<link-entity name="cas_costobjectlocation" from="cas_costobjectlocationid" to="cas_costobjectlocation_location" link-type="outer" alias="location" >
<attribute name="cas_site" />
<attribute name="cas_warehouse" />
</link-entity>
</link-entity>
</entity>
</fetch>

It could show the view data in CDS site, but when I tried to use it as data source in the power apps -> table control, it cannot show other entities fields(such as Product, Site and Warehouse). I'm so confused and I'm wondering why it is different?  Seems it's loading the all default data from the first entity.

Hi Sik,

I tried your solution but did not work.

1. On the report page, I add the collection ReportView in the OnVisible property.

ClearCollect(ReportView,AddColumns('Cost Accounting Measurements',"Product",LookUp('Cost Objects','Cost Object'='Cost Accounting Measurements'[@costobject].'Cost Object',resource).Product,"Site",LookUp('Cost Objects','Cost Object'='Cost Accounting Measurements'[@costobject].'Cost Object',location).Site,"Warehouse",LookUp('Cost Objects','Cost Object'='Cost Accounting Measurements'[@costobject].'Cost Object',location).Warehouse))

2. Add one button, Add below collection on

Collect(ReportData,AddColumns(GroupBy(Filter(ReportView,cas_subledgeraccount="Inventory"),"cas_environmentid","cas_subledgeraccount","cas_resource","Product","Site","Warehouse","all_data"),"inflow_qty",Sum(Filter(all_data,cas_measurerole=[@cas_measurerole].ProductCostInflow&&cas_resourcetype=[@cas_resourcetype].Product),cas_magnitude),"inflow_amount",Sum(Filter(all_data,cas_measurerole=[@cas_measurerole].ProductCostInflow&&cas_resourcetype=[@cas_resourcetype].Currency),cas_magnitude),"outflow_qty",Sum(Filter(all_data,cas_measurerole=[@cas_measurerole].ProductCostOutflow&&cas_resourcetype=[@cas_resourcetype].Product),cas_magnitude),"outflow_amount",Sum(Filter(all_data,cas_measurerole=[@cas_measurerole].ProductCostOutflow&&cas_resourcetype=[@cas_resourcetype].Currency),cas_magnitude)))

3. Add a table grid with data source = ReportData. When click the button, but there is no still data for Product, Site and Warehouse.

Hi @Ivy_Liu, not sure if you resolved this already, but from my understanding it should work. Suggest to check with the product team (since you're Microsoft) or open a support ticket to report the bug at: https://admin.powerplatform.microsoft.com/support

Cheers

Hi Eric,

It cannot work, the view with joining 3 CDS entities cannot support right now. I’m guessing this is because the views cannot retrieve columns deeper than just one level related N:1.

But we're having a 3 level hierarchy,CostAccountingMeasurement--- 1:N --- CostObject --- 1:N --- CostObjectResource.

You can refer to the link https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/Power-Apps-Ideas/Give-views-ability-retrieve-columns-deeper-than...

It should work unless you’re returning N records from the related entities on the primary entity that is bound to the view. But this limitation is only on model-driven app views (and maybe now CDS canvas app connector...). You can still save that as a view and reference it correctly with the right results from the API for example:
