How to patch multiple dropdowns in a gallery into a collection?

Hello everyone,

I hope all is well,

What I need:

I need to patch multiple dropdowns after they are being selected by the user in a gallery into a collection by using a button

What does the gallery look like:

Roberto_el_Hajj_0-1667950793649.png

Whenever the user presses the edit button, the gallery's display mode will be set to Edit mode and the user will be able to add a new record by pressing the "New" button.

After adding the new row in the gallery and whenever the edit button is pressed by the user, the gallery's display mode will be reseted to View mode and all the records will be patched in the same collection.

This collection is being used on the Items property of the gallery.

My expression:

On the "New button":

ForAll(
    Sequence(1),
Collect(ComptCol,
{
 competencyId:Blank(),
 competencyLevel:Blank()

}
)
)

On the Edit button:

ForAll(
    Gallery2.AllItems,

    Patch(
        ComptCol,
       ThisRecord,
        {
            competencyId: ComboBox4_27.Selected.id,
            competencyLevel: ComboBox4_28.Selected.id
        }
    )

);

My Problem:

Roberto_el_Hajj_1-1667951273018.png

Whenever I add a new item and press the edit button the value of the newly added record is not being patched, instead, a blank record is being added.

So how I can fix this issue?

Any help will be highly appreciated,

Thank you

@Roberto_el_Hajj ,

They appear incorrect - they need to be a Table in the format {Output: ThisItem.FieldNameDisplayed} with Output being ComboBox.Selected.Output.

Hello @WarrenBelz ,

So the {Output: ThisItem.FieldNameDisplayed} should be placed on the DefaultSelectedItems but where should I place the ComboBox.Selected.Output. ?

Hi @Roberto_el_Hajj ,

Going back a step, you need Tables in both your DefaultSelectedItems and Items. In the first one your Items are

SortByColumns(
   vwCompetency,
   "codeAndDesc",
   Ascending
)

which is a Table, but you have not stated which field from this Table you are displaying in the control. For the purposes of this exercise, I will use Level as the field name. Your DefaultSelectedItems using what you posted then should be (unless I have misinterpreted your structure)

{
   Level:
   If(
      Gallery2.DisplayMode = DisplayMode.View ||
      Gallery2.DisplayMode = DisplayMode.Edit,
      LookUp(
         vwCompetency,
         id = ThisItem.competencyId
      ).Level
   )
}

Hi @WarrenBelz ,

I'm getting the data from the following table:

Roberto_el_Hajj_0-1668065122014.png

I want to always display the "codeAndDesc" column in the Combobox but want ever it's submitted I want to patch the id of selected items

@Roberto_el_Hajj ,

Then you should need codeAndDesc instead of Level where I have it.

Thanks @WarrenBelz , I'm just making sure that this is the right field.

I really appreciate your help so much and thank you for the fast replies.

Dear @WarrenBelz ,

I have one more question if you don't mind,

Whenever I press the submit button, the number of number of total records in the gallery is duplicated and added to the collection.

I think it's because of Gallery.AllItems and the ForAll function while I'm fetching.

Thus, is there any way to fix that ?

ForAll(
 Gallery2.AllItems,
    Collect(
        ComptCol,
        Patch(
            ComptCol,
            ThisRecord,
            {
               competencyId:ComboBox4_27.Selected.id,
               competencyLevel: ComboBox4_28.Selected.id

            }
        )
    )
)

Hi @Roberto_el_Hajj ,

You do not need Collect and Patch together - use one or the other

ForAll(
   Gallery2.AllItems As aCol,
   Collect(
      ComptCol,
      {
         competencyId: aCol.ComboBox4_27.Selected.id,
         competencyLevel: acol.ComboBox4_28.Selected.id
      }
   )
)

Hello @WarrenBelz ,

I used patch because whenever I add a blank item by pressing the "New" button, I'm creating a blank row in the collection and whenever I press the "Submit" button, I'm trying to patch the filled records into these blank records.

Thus, the user should add blank records dynamically so he can add records as many as he needs and then he will fills them and finally submits these records.

So, what is the best practice to achieve that in your opinion?

Hi @Roberto_el_Hajj ,

They are two separate processes. I tend to use Collect for new records in a Collection, but you need Patch to update existing records. You model is a bit unusual (as I noted, if I am using a Collection as the Items for an editable gallery, I update either each field or each record as they are changed, then I can update the data source with the Collection at the end when the user is satisfied all is correct). Although back to your question - you need to use one or the other to add the records.
