You need to turn on the Enhanced Formula bar in Advanced Settings, under Experimental Features.  This has to be set on an app by app basis.

You can tell easily if this feature is on, based on the appearance of the caret at the end of the formula bar and the fact that Expand Formula Bar is not displayed.  Compare your formula bar to this one with the feature enabled.

To turn it on go to File - Settings - Advanced Settings and scroll down to Experimental Features.  Locate Enhanced Formula Bar and toggle it on.  You'll have to save, exit and reopen the editor for the change to take effect.
