Issue with emailing data

Hi,

   I'm new to powerapps but not new to software development.  I am trying to build a simple power app that will allow QC people at my plant to log a "Quality Hold".  The user will fill data into a simple form, then there will be a submit button at the bottom of the form which will send an email to those that need to know... The submit button is in a data card on the form and here is the "OnSelect" code:

Office365Outlook.SendEmailV2("xxx@xxx.com", "New Quality Hold Created", "A new Quality Hold has been created by Quality Control. Here are the details: </br></br><b>Part Number:</b> " & ThisItem.Title & "</br><b>Press:</b> " & ThisItem.Press & "</br><b>Defect:</b> " & ThisItem.Issue & "</br><b>Quantity:</b> " & ThisItem.Quantity & "</br><b>Date and Time:</b> " & ThisItem.HoldDate & " </br></br><hr></br>");SubmitForm(EditForm1)

When you click the button, the email gets send but there is no data.  All of the "ThisItem"'s are blank. If I put the "SubmitForm" command first, then I get get data but not for this record. I think it fills in with the first record in the database. Can someone explain what's going on? All the tutorials I googled say this is the right way to do it. Thanks!

No worries on the dev vs PowerApps as PowerApps is a no-code platform 🙂

Here is what you need to do.  Your submit button should be outside of your Form instead of in a datacard in the form (it will not impact the process, but it is a "best practice" on design).

Your Submit button OnSelect should simply be:  SubmitForm(EditForm1)

Then, in the OnSuccess action of the form, you should have the following formula:

Office365Outlook.SendEmailV2(
    "xxx@xxx.com",
    "New Quality Hold Created",
    "A new Quality Hold has been created by Quality Control. Here are the details: </br></br><b>Part Number:</b> " & Self.LastSubmit.Title &
    "</br><b>Press:</b> " & Self.LastSubmit.Press &
    "</br><b>Defect:</b> " & Self.LastSubmit.Issue &
    "</br><b>Quantity:</b> " & Self.LastSubmit.Quantity &
    "</br><b>Date and Time:</b> " & Self.LastSubmit.HoldDate &
    " </br></br><hr></br>"
)

With your original formula, you would have been sending out an email regardless of the success or failure of the submit.  The EditForm provides an OnSuccess and an OnFailure action just so you can do things based on those conditions.

I hope this is helpful for you.

That did the trick. Thank you!...

However, I would argue that PowerApps is, in fact, code based since these are clearly function calls. It's just a very high level language that is completely object/event based... I'm just nit picking...

Glad to help.

PowerApps is based on Excel.  So, if you would consider a function such as Sum, Day, Date, Hour, etc., etc. as code, then your definition would apply.  But it is rare to consider building an Excel spreadsheet as developing/coding as much as designing.  It's a subtle point, but coming from a real developer background (as you are also) real coding/developing usually involves a developer environment, debugging, and complied code.  PowerApps comes close to simulating this, but it is no where near real code.  But that then opens the can of worms of - is scripting developing?  Personally I say no because of the fact it is not compiled into an actual application.

Anyway, what is more important is that your app is doing what you want now.  Also good to keep in mind that PowerApps is referential just like Excel.  If you find yourself using a lot of Actions (OnSelect, OnChange, etc.), you are trying to make PowerApps a development environment - which it's not, and you will struggle more with it.  If you reference what you have in your app (just like in Excel where you would reference a cell with another formula in order to get the value of that formula to then perhaps use in yet another formula) then you will find PowerApps pretty simple to work with.

Took me a few months coming from the Dev world to get this point in my head.  Once I did, everything opened up perfectly.  Took a lot of cursing and head scratching to get there.

So again...happy to help!

I think you are right, I have been thinking of this as a event based development environment instead of a reference based environment.  It will still probably take me some time to fully get my head around it but this has probably shaved a significant amount of time off of that. Thanks again!

@Anonymous

Yep, that was my issue at first - looked at everything as Events...just like I did in development.  It's one of those things that you have to completely void the mind of everything you know in development, but keep enough of it around to know what you are doing.  But really, thinking in terms of Excel is very helpful.  It's kind of like - there is a ton of ways to make things work in Excel, PowerApps brings it all to a whole new level because it also provides Event actions for when you need them - in other words, the actions are the exception, not the rule.

Glad to shave some time off of learning for you.  Keep up the good work!
