Loading Spinner Freezes when loading data

So this is interesting.  I have a SVG loading spinner that I show when a button is clicked.  I have a timer that then does a filter on a local collection, this is done on the OnTimerStart.  I then OnTimerEnd hide the loader and set the variable used to start the timer back to false.  Now once I click the button, the spinner shows up and starts spinning.  Then the data starts loading and the spinner freezes.  Once the data is loaded the spinner starts up again for a split second and then is hidden.

Just wondering if anyone else has seen this and if they found a solution.

Thanks,
Mike L.

This is going to depend on the formulas you have going on during that process.  Some formulas by themselves, or when not combined properly, will consume resources of the app in such a way that it locks (becomes unresponsive) during that time...in which case, your display will freeze.

So, I would look over the formulas you have processing at that time.

The Monitor tool is also a good place to look to see timing and durations of things.

I hope this is helpful for you.

There is only a single formula running in the OnTimerStart.  It is a clear collect that is filtering a location collection based on about 5 items.

ClearCollect(
colFilteredProjects,
Filter(
colAllProjects,
StartDateYear = cmbProjectFilterStartYear_WS.Selected.Result || cmbProjectFilterStartYear_WS.Selected.Result = glbAllValue,
EndDateYear = cmbProjectFilterEndYear_WS.Selected.Result || cmbProjectFilterEndYear_WS.Selected.Result = glbAllValue,
State in cmbProjectFilterCurrentState_WS.SelectedItems || IsBlank(cmbProjectFilterCurrentState_WS.SelectedItems) || IsEmpty(cmbProjectFilterCurrentState_WS.SelectedItems),
CurrentStatus in cmbProjectFilterCurrentStatus_WS.SelectedItems || IsBlank(cmbProjectFilterCurrentStatus_WS.SelectedItems) || IsEmpty(cmbProjectFilterCurrentStatus_WS.SelectedItems),
ProgramManagerDisplayName in cmbProjectFilterProgramManager_WS.SelectedItems || IsBlank(cmbProjectFilterProgramManager_WS.SelectedItems) || IsEmpty(cmbProjectFilterProgramManager_WS.SelectedItems),
ProductOwnerDisplayName in cmbProjectFilterProductOwner_WS.SelectedItems || IsBlank(cmbProjectFilterProductOwner_WS.SelectedItems) || IsEmpty(cmbProjectFilterProductOwner_WS.SelectedItems),
Lower(txtProjectFilterFreeText_WS.Text) in Lower(Title) || IsBlank(txtProjectFilterFreeText_WS.Text)
)
);

I am doing it this way because my data is stored in SharePoint and some of the filter options will have delegation issues with large data sets.  So I collect everything right now locally and then filter as needed.  Right now the total of the large collection would be 60 items.

Thanks,
Mike L.

That's a pretty low amount of records.

I would consider prefiltering your data rather than the collection in this case.  Collections are all in-memory operations (and they are static - meaning that you need to constantly reload them when changes are made).  In memory operations can easily get into an intensive memory transfer operation that can cause unresponsiveness.

However, also keep in mind that once you update your collection in that formula, ALL controls that use it will then all also update.  THIS is usually the cause of the screen freezes.

Again, if you take a look at the monitoring tool, you will see that collection formula execute and then you will most likely see a whole bunch of other controls then update.

How is colAppProjects defined (what formula do you have to create it)?  That's usually, at least for the collection part I mentioned, to start to make your app more data aware and less collection and memory based.

@RandyHayes

I hear you on the collection aspect.  I would just use the SharePoint list directly but the query that I have is not all delegable to SharePoint so that is what forces me into the collection space.

All this does is populate a gallery that has about 10 fields.  So that should not be to intensive.  Also I must not know how to use the monitor very well.  I can see the ClearCollect line items but I get 4 to 8 lines after all with a result info of "The number passed in is a blank value".  Is there somewhere to read up on the Monitor tool?

Once a user selects and item I add that to a different variable to use throughout the rest of the application.

colAppProjects is just a simple ClearCollect pointing to the primary SharePoint list.

Thanks,
Mike L.

The monitor tool can be a little intimidating at first, but once you sort through it, it is one of the more useful tools in the platform.

What to look at in those items after the collection is to see what the control name is that is causing them.  That will also show you the formulas that are causing it.  Not to say that it is definitive that there is a problem there, but to say that is how you hunt it down.

I've never seen any docs on the tool.  For me it was just a bit of time to get used to it.  Once you do, you'll see it has a lot of power to tell you everything you ever wanted to know about your app.
