Make Lat/Long Like Offline Y/N

When using PowerApps in the browser, on a laptop for example, Location.Latitude/Longitude are at the whim of your internet connection.

I get a different Lat/Long depending on:

  • VPN connection
  • Connecting to iPhone Hotspot
  • Connecting to JetPack Hotspot

I propose eliminating Lat/Long "pseudo-sensors" from the browser altogether just like PowerApps does not allow Offline caching of content in the browser.

Its not accurate. Don't use it.

Please don't make me create an "Idea" for this... too busy and it will be 3 years before people understand that they too need this!

Also curious WHEN PowerApps "pulls" a user lat/long...

I can change internet connections mid stride and the lat/long does NOT change (even though it has). Seems like I need to close/open the app to get it to recognize the change...

**EDIT**

  • Disregard! I just had to pull away from the app long enough to type the above.. (prolly 1.5 mins)
  • It likely uses Azure IP to Location API!!! HAAHH!

Hi @ericonline ,

Could you please share a bit more about your scenario?

Actually, the result the Location.Latitude formula and the Location.Longitude formula returns is based on the Region you set for your device.

If you want the Location.Latitude formula and the Location.Longitude formula returns proper values, you set the Region of your device as your local region.

In addition, the result the Location.Latitude formula and the Location.Longitude formula returns would not be updated automatically when your device is from offline to online. Currently, as an fixed solution, you must re-open your app.

Hi @v-xida-msft ,

I have to politely refute 🙂 !

  • Lat/Long is most definitely NOT based on region set on a laptop
  • It is based somehow on the internet connection
  • Below I connect to three different internet connections, standing in the same office.
  • I did not touch region settings on my laptop

Test:

And just to be clear of the impact here... This basically nullifies developing any location-based services if users will use a laptop/desktop during a usecase.

Example:

  • Azure Maps Get Search Address Reverse which provides the nearest address when given Lat/Long will not relaibly work on laptop.
  • Azure Maps Get Search Nearby which provides the nearest points-of-interest (POI's like HOSPITALS, etc.) based on Lat/Long will not reliably work on laptop.
  • etc.

Any insights from the PowerApps team on this one?

Hi @ericonline thanks for the feedback on this issue. Is this thread the same as the one you created here? I want the team to review this but want to make sure it's not two separate issues.

Thank you,

@Anonymous

Yes it is. And THANK YOU! for escalating this.

Here is the warning I have to add to my apps when using Lat/Long. This will likely result in training issues and calls for support to explain.
