Navigating between 2 screens - that use 2 share point lists

I am a newbie and trying to build my own apps. Case in point here is I have 2 sharepoint list.

List 1 - List of action items , Name - Action_Items

List 2 - List of comments, Name - Comments (Foreign Key : Action Item Key, which exists on Action_Items)

Screen 1 :- lists all items in Action_items, connected to Action_Items (sharepoint list). User can navigate to each action item (screen2)

Screen 2 : - In the display/edit screen, the bottom section shows all associated comments to the Action item. There is a button which navigates to a 3rd screen (Add Comments)

Screen 3 : - In this 3rd screen (Add Comments) I need to have only 2 inputs - Action Item Key and Comments - this is connected to Comments (sharepoint list) , which should get updated on submit

The challenge is how does one transfer the Action item information from Screen 2 to Screen 3.

I did the following -

Tried to use Navigate('Add Comments', ScreenTransition.Fade,{ pass as variable}). Receive in 3rd screen and try to set drop down value to this selected value

On screen 3 - attempt to access the datacard value of screen 2

In both cases receive an error. I am sure its my incorrect understanding of "context". Any pointers on what I might be doing wrong

Hi @PM ,

Could you please share a screenshot about your Screen2 and Screen3?

Is the "Action Item Key" a LookUp type column in your Comments List, which references values from Action_Items List?

Do you want to pass selected Action_Item info from Screen2 ro Screen3? How do you list the all available Action Items in your screen1? Using a Gallery?

Based on the scenario you mentioned, I assume that you added a Gallery control in your Screen1 to list all avaiable action items from your Action_Items list, is it true?

If you want to pass selected Action_Item info from Screen2 ro Screen3, I think the context variable or global variable could achieve your needs.

Within your Screen2, set the OnSelect property of the "Navigate" button (click it to navigate to Screen3) to following:

 Navigate('Add Comments', ScreenTransition.Fade, {CurrentActionItem: Gallery1.Selected})

Note: The Gallery1 represents the Gallery control in your Screen1 to list all avaiable action items.

Then within your Screen3, you could reference values from the Action Item info in Screen2 through the CurrentActionItem variable:

CurrentActionItem.Column1
CurrentActionItem.Column2

...

In addition, you could also use global variable to achieve your needs. Please set the OnSelect property of the "Navigate" button (click it to navigate to Screen3) within Screen2 to following:

Set(CurrentActionItem, Gallery1.Selected);
Navigate('Add Comments', ScreenTransition.Fade)

Then within your Screen3, you could reference values from action item in Screen2 through this variable.

If the 'Action Item Key' column is a LookUp type column in your Comments list, and you want to auto-populate the 'Action Item Key' ComboBox within the Edit form in your Screen3, please consider take a try with the following workaround:

Within your Screen3, set the Items proeprty of the 'Action Item Key' ComboBox in the Edit form to following:

Choices(Comments.'Action Item Key')

set the DefaultSelectedItems property of the 'Action Item Key' ComboBox to following:

{
    Id:  CurrentActionItem.ID,
Value: CurrentActionItem.ReferencedColumn }

Note: The 'Action Item Key' LookUp field in your Comments SP list reference values from the ReferencedColumn in your Action_Items List.

Please take a try with above solution, check if the issue is solved.

The navigate sections work a whole lot better. I think I am also able to pass value now between screen. My challenge is now the actual submission.

On Screen 3 - I still have 2 fields.

The form by default is connected to "Comments" sharepoint list.

Two fields on it -

Action Item (combo box)

Comments (Rich Text)

Challenge : -

  • Action Item (combo box) - data source should be values in a sharepoint list "Action_Items", column " Action Item Key"
  • I tried a variation of your suggestion - Choices(Action_Items."Action Item Key")
  • I additionally set the default value using your suggestion -
    • {
          Id:  CurrentActionItem.ID,
      Value: CurrentActionItem.ReferencedColumn }

End result is - I do not either receive any controls during run time or receive an error to select the correct data source or controls.

I suspect the issue is while the form is connection to 1 data sources (list), one of the field is attempting to show a dropdown based on another data source (list).

Thank you for your guidance. I was able to fix some of the navigation issue, but my fundamental problem still remains. Let me explain -

  • My screen 3 has 2 fields  - Action Item Key and Comments.
  • The forms data sources is Comments(list)
  • Action Item Key is a drop down list that will provide a drop down, data source for it should be the column Action Item Key from Action Items (list).
    • This drop down value is set to be the one received from the previous screen and is meant to be edit only
    • Users are expected to only fill out the Comments fields on this form
  • On clicking submit, the Action Item Key and Comments should be written into Comments (list)

My challenges -

If I set the data source for the dropdown field to another list - none of the controls are rendered in run mode.

  • Tried using the Choices function as you suggested and used it in combination with Action Item list.
  • Tried to change this from drop down to text field and simply set the values on it using your suggestiong of passing variables between screen - no controls rendered on the page ( I must be doing something wrong)

If I set the data source for the drop down field to source values from Comments

  • It works , but will only show those for which value exists in Comments list. So if Action Item list has 5 values and if we are trying to add comment for one of the 5 values that do not exist in Comments list, it will simply show a blank
  • And throw an error when you try to save.

Any help.

@v-xida-msft  - Bump. Not sure why, but my recent updates are not showing up from Friday & Saturday.

Any one has any insight?
