New PowerApps and Flow Licensing coming October 1, 2019

If you haven't seen the announcement yet about the Licensing changes that are coming to PowerApps and Flow starting on October 1, 2019 you really need to read the following Blog. This announcement was originally made at Inspire this year, but has undergone a number of significant changes.  Make sure you read this and understand what it means to you and your organization.

That depends somewhat on what changes were made to the SQL connector.  In general if the SQL connector existed in the app prior to October, 2019 it should be covered by the grandfathering.

understood. The connector was removed and readded in March.

So this will break in October? The app was made in September 2019

If its working now then it should continue to work for the next 5 years.  If you create a new app now and add a SQL connector that would require premium.  But if its still working then it didn't detect that the SQL connector was removed and re-added.  It still thinks its been there since Sept, 2019

@Pstork1 ,

wow that’s great news!! I thought it would break October 1st, 2020.. it says the license designation is premium but none of the users who are using the app have been prompted for anything like that.

any way to ensure they won’t break at that time?

No way to really check before October.  The problem is that all apps were grandfathered in for one year, but SQL connections got 5.  The problem is there is no way to tell whether its still working due to the one year extension or the 5 year SQL extension.

@Pstork1

Understood.

the SQL connector says it was created in March, but the app was made back in September of last year.

guess there’s no way to know for sure. That’s pretty problematic for citizen developers like myself.

@Pstork1

After reading this whole thread, it got me wondering about how many apps are around that use premium connectors.  Microsoft will surely know this and in a few weeks will be billing those who do.

I searched a bit and found some PowerShell scripts for this and other useful things.

If you do try this, let us know your experience with it please.

What is going to happens with the existing free versions of PowerApps? Will it begin to incur a cost?

Could you explain a bit more about what you mean by the Free version of Power Apps?  There is a no additional cost version of Power Apps that is included in Office 365 licensing and there is a time boxed trial version.  But there is no free version that I'm aware of.  There was a free version of Flow (Power Automate), but I don't remember a free version of Power Apps.
