No confirmation email after signing up in Portal

The sign up form in my portal isn't working properly. After registering, I am supposed to receive an email confirmation, but I haven't received anything so far. I have even tried to edit the process "Send Email Confirmation To Contact" to add a custom email address from a user account with no effect...Has anyone had a similar problem and knows how to fix it?
