Patch multiselect combo box to multiple records in sql

Hello - I need assistance with Patch to patch multiple selections from a combo box into a record for each choice in sql. I think I'm close but not quite there.

I have a form with multiple combo boxes. For each one, I have the values writing to a Sharepoint list correctly as multi-select columns, however I also want to patch this to a sql database in seperate tables for each combo box with multiple records for each choice. Form interface:

Patches correctly to Sharepoint:

kky1_1-1680721975587.png

My code example on the Submit of my form, the data source for which is my SP list above.

ForAll(DataCardValue85_1.SelectedItems,
    Patch(Audience_final, Defaults(Audience_final),
{
    PK: Last(Audience_final).PK + 1,
    Award_ID: Value(DataCardValue59_3.Text),
    AwardName: DataCardValue60_3.Text,
    Audience_ID: Switch(DataCardValue85_1.Selected.Value,"Staff",1, "Graduate Students",2,"Undergraduate Students",3,"Tenured Faculty",4,"Untenured Faculty",5,"Advisers",6,"Academic Administrators",7,""),
    Award_Audience: DataCardValue85_1.Selected.Value
})
);

Example of results in sql. It loops the number of times for which I made a selection in the form; however, it is displaying the same item 4x as opposed to displaying all four of the items I'd selected just once.

kky1_2-1680722125704.png

It is doing this for all three of the combo boxes.

After reading a solution at: http://powerappsguide.com/blog/post/sharepoint-applying-patch-to-the-6-complex-data-types, I tried amending the code to:

ForAll(DataCardValue56.SelectedItems,
    Patch(CriteriaFinal, Defaults(CriteriaFinal),
{
    PK: Last(CriteriaFinal).PK + 1,
    Award_ID: Value(DataCardValue59_3.Text),
    AwardName: DataCardValue60_3.Text,
    CriteriaDesc:
    Table(
        {'@odata.type':"#Microsoft.Azure.Connectors.SharePoint.SPListExpandedReference",
        VAlue: DataCardValue56.Selected.Value})
})
);

But now I get an error:

kky1_3-1680722217240.png

Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to do this?

Try this

ClearCollect(colAudience,
ForAll(
DataCardValue85_1.SelectedItems,
{
Award_ID: Value(DataCardValue59_3.Text),
AwardName: DataCardValue60_3.Text,
Audience_ID: Switch(DataCardValue85_1.Selected.Value,"Staff",1, "Graduate Students",2,"Undergraduate Students",3,"Tenured Faculty",4,"Untenured Faculty",5,"Advisers",6,"Academic Administrators",7,""),
Award_Audience: DataCardValue85_1.Selected.Value
}
)
);

Set(lastPK, Last(Audience_final).PK);

ForAll(
colAudience,
Patch(
Audience_final,
Defaults(Audience_final),
{
PK: lastPK + 1,
Award_ID: ThisRecord.Award_ID,
AwardName: ThisRecord.AwardName,
Audience_ID: ThisRecord.Audience_ID,
Award_Audience: ThisRecord.Award_Audience
}
)
);

Set(lastPK, lastPK + CountRows(colAudience));

It looks like the issue with your code is that you are using the Last function to get the last record in the Audience_final table and then adding 1 to its primary key value to create a new record. This will result in all of the new records having the same primary key value, which is causing the duplicates in your SQL table.

To fix this, you can use a variable to keep track of the last primary key value used, and increment it by 1 for each new record. Here's an example of how you can update your code for the DataCardValue85_1 combo box:
Set(lastPK, Last(Audience_final).PK);
ForAll(DataCardValue85_1.SelectedItems,
Patch(Audience_final, Defaults(Audience_final),
{
PK: lastPK + 1,
Award_ID: Value(DataCardValue59_3.Text),
AwardName: DataCardValue60_3.Text,
Audience_ID: Switch(DataCardValue85_1.Selected.Value,"Staff",1, "Graduate Students",2,"Undergraduate Students",3,"Tenured Faculty",4,"Untenured Faculty",5,"Advisers",6,"Academic Administrators",7,""),
Award_Audience: DataCardValue85_1.Selected.Value
}
);
Set(lastPK, lastPK + 1)
);

This code initializes the lastPK variable to the value of the last primary key in the Audience_final table, and then increments it by 1 for each new record created by the Patch function. The Set function updates the value of lastPK after each iteration of the ForAll function, so that it keeps track of the last primary key used.

You can modify the code for the other combo boxes in a similar way, using a separate variable to keep track of the last primary key value for each table.

Thank you so much @SimnaJ !!  I so much appreciate your helpful explanation!

My code is now as you've recommended but I'm getting an error - I suspect I have something wrong in the syntax?

kky1_1-1680722958914.png

Set(lastPK, Last(Audience_final).PK);
ForAll(DataCardValue85_1.SelectedItems,
    Patch(Audience_final, Defaults(Audience_final),
{
    PK: lastPK + 1,
    Award_ID: Value(DataCardValue59_3.Text),
    AwardName: DataCardValue60_3.Text,
    Audience_ID: Switch(DataCardValue85_1.Selected.Value,"Staff",1, "Graduate Students",2,"Undergraduate Students",3,"Tenured Faculty",4,"Untenured Faculty",5,"Advisers",6,"Academic Administrators",7,""),
    Award_Audience: DataCardValue85_1.Selected.Value
}
);
Set(lastPK, lastPK + 1)
);

It looks like you're missing a closing parenthesis after the closing curly brace in the Patch function. Try the following code:

Set(lastPK, Last(Audience_final).PK);
ForAll(DataCardValue85_1.SelectedItems,
Patch(Audience_final, Defaults(Audience_final),
{
PK: lastPK + 1,
Award_ID: Value(DataCardValue59_3.Text),
AwardName: DataCardValue60_3.Text,
Audience_ID: Switch(DataCardValue85_1.Selected.Value,"Staff",1, "Graduate Students",2,"Undergraduate Students",3,"Tenured Faculty",4,"Untenured Faculty",5,"Advisers",6,"Academic Administrators",7,""),
Award_Audience: DataCardValue85_1.Selected.Value
}
);
Set(lastPK, lastPK + 1)
)

In this code, the closing parenthesis for the Patch function is on the same line as the closing curly brace. Also, the Set function that increments the lastPK variable is now inside the ForAll function.
If you feel that my response has helped you, please consider giving it a thumbs up and please mark it as the solution. This will help other community members find the solution quickly if they have a similar issue in the future.

I copied and pasted the code but still throwing an error that the Set function cannot be invoked inside the ForAll

Try this

Instead, you can use a variable to store the last PK value before the ForAll loop and then increment it inside the loop. Here is the updated code:

ClearCollect(colAudience,
ForAll(
DataCardValue85_1.SelectedItems,
{
Award_ID: Value(DataCardValue59_3.Text),
AwardName: DataCardValue60_3.Text,
Audience_ID: Switch(DataCardValue85_1.Selected.Value,"Staff",1, "Graduate Students",2,"Undergraduate Students",3,"Tenured Faculty",4,"Untenured Faculty",5,"Advisers",6,"Academic Administrators",7,""),
Award_Audience: DataCardValue85_1.Selected.Value
}
)
);

Set(lastPK, Last(Audience_final).PK);

ForAll(
colAudience,
Patch(
Audience_final,
Defaults(Audience_final),
{
PK: lastPK + 1,
Award_ID: ThisRecord.Award_ID,
AwardName: ThisRecord.AwardName,
Audience_ID: ThisRecord.Audience_ID,
Award_Audience: ThisRecord.Award_Audience
}
);
Set(lastPK, lastPK + 1)
)
I hope this helps!

Gave this a shot and was really hopeful, but it is still giving me the same error on the last Set action:
