Power Apps w AS400 iSeries IBMi Connection

Hi. I've been tasked by our Mgmt to look into Power Apps to see if it would be useful for some of our possible low code work.

I've read comments in other posts about connecting to AS400 data sources but have never seen a full step by step.

I have created a simple physical file on the 400 with DSPUSRPRF and an outfile.

In Power Apps I've created an On Premise Gateway. It is showing connected and all connection tests completed successfully.

I've created a couple of connection with information I've picked up in other related posts:

First attempt

Display name: myIBMi

Connect using on premise

Server name: systemname.mycompany.com:446

Database: systemname

Authentication: Basic

Username: myusername

Password: mypassword

Choose a gateway: I use the dropdown and select the Gateway I defined

I click Save, it does. Status shows Connected

I click Apps, New app, Canvas, Start with data, select my Connection

Get a message "The tables didn't load correctly" and this:

Microsoft Db2 Client: No such host is known SQLSTATE=08S01 SQLCODE=-1336
inner exception: Microsoft Db2 Client: No such host is known SQLSTATE=08S01 SQLCODE=-1336
clientRequestId: 84624039-d11f-4d8d-9d5c-d0f8efdbdad8

Session ID: b96f2908-8cd0-4192-a736-349230535fb7

Second attempt

Display name: myIBMi

Connect using on premise

Server name: systemname.mycompany.com:446

Database: QGPL.DSPUSRPRF       <===== this is different everything else the same

Authentication: Basic

Username: myusername

Password: mypassword

Choose a gateway: I use the dropdown and select the Gateway I defined

I click Save, it does. Status shows Connected

I click Apps, New app, Canvas, Start with data, select my Connection

Get a message "The tables didn't load correctly" and this:

Microsoft Db2 Client: No such host is known SQLSTATE=08S01 SQLCODE=-1336
inner exception: Microsoft Db2 Client: No such host is known SQLSTATE=08S01 SQLCODE=-1336
clientRequestId: de90c176-cd3b-4807-9ab5-06dda0643725

Session ID: bf699b7f-ef36-4a0c-b183-084e3fb8c8bf

I have tried variations of the database settings, such as including the system name, nothing seems to work.

The file on the IBMi 400 is a simple flat file, an outfile from DSPUSRPRF.

I have confirmed I have a VPN connection to the IBMi, I have confirmed my ID and password and can log in.

I have checked DRDA and port 446, it is active and listening.

I see no messages in the QSYSOPR log or syslog.

It my understanding I should see a list of available databases with my first Connection example if it were to work.

Questions:

Is a Gateway required for connection to the IBMi?

We have a Microsoft 365 Enterprise license. Would uses of an app need any other licensing to use, say on a tablet or phone?

And, what is the problem with the connection? Why can't I see my data pulled from the 400 / IBMi?

Thanks in advance.

iGuy

Hi @iGuy

In answer to these questions...

>> Is a Gateway required for connection to the IBMi?

If you're accessing an on premise instance of DB2 (which I assume you are), an on-premise gateway is required.

>> We have a Microsoft 365 Enterprise license. Would uses of an app need any other licensing to use, say on a tablet or phone?

The DB2 connector is a premium connector. Therefore, users will require an additional per app/or per user Power Apps license to access this data source.

>> And, what is the problem with the connection? Why can't I see my data pulled from the 400 / IBMi?

The most likely problem is connectivity between your on premise gateway and your IBM server. It looks like Power Apps is connecting to the gateway correctly, but the connection between the gateway and IBM server is failing. The first thing to check would be the underlying connectivity between the gateway and the server. From the gateway machine, can you ping the server? If so, can you access port 446 from the gateway? Telnet might be a good way to check this connectivity.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I can Telnet with port 446 to the Server. NETSTAT (400 command) shows Idle Time resetting to zero when I hit the Telnet meaning it got activity through the port. I can successfully PING and also get a 5250 session to the server.

I found the problem. I had to use my actual IP address (w/ port 446) rather than my Host Table name on the AS400.

Even though it's defined in the TCP entries, the actual IP address worked.

Pulled up a full list of the libraries.files on the system to select on my App Canvas.

Thanks.

@iGuy - I am also being task with something similar, and I know this an old thread, but did you have to install any other drivers to get this working. I have an On Premise Gateway installed and configured, tried creating connection with DSN name and IP both with port 446, entered the Hostname as the Database, and the QGPL.Library name as per your option 2, but no matter what always get credentials for the DB2 source are invalid. Your post gave me hope, however fleeting that this was possible, and I do not know anything about AS400 etc.. to check if there is any log files I can check to see what is failing.

Help would be appreciated 🙂
